This lesson gives students a simplified and broken-down way of accessing a non-fiction text. The text is around a diary entry of a family preparing for the Diwali festival. The first part poses comprehension and language activities looking at a the features of an autobiographical text. The activities ensure the text is carefully read. The second part of the lesson looks at images of Diwali celebrations, and tasks allow students to write about the festival.

The lesson also looks at some examples of Diwali poems, and students are given the opportunity to write their own Diwali poems.

This lesson is also suitable for PSHE lessons, as it looks at multiculturalism and celebrates diversity
