23 women and men variously involved or caught up in Atlantic enslavement, resistance, and abolition. 12 unique crosswords, getting progressively harder from A (easy: shorter words, in-line help) to L (hard: longer words, no help). They look similar: pupils tend not to notice the differentiation in my experience.

Answer are the unbracketed names from this pool: Nat (Turner); (Henry) Box (Brown); William (Wilberforce); John (Hawkins); Mary (Prince); (Olaudah) Equiano; Dred (Scott); John (Brown); (Abraham) Lincoln; Henry (Thoreau); Suzie (Taylor); (Alexander) Augusta; (Harriet Beecher) Stowe; (Jefferson) Davis; (Granville) Sharp; (Frederick) Douglass; (Sojourner) Truth; (Sir Francis) Drake; Edward (Colston); Toussaint (Louverture); (Robert) Smalls; (Harriet) Tubman; Grimke (Sisters).

Each grid sits on an A4 sheet with clues on a separate sheet to optimise space for writing. .doc and .pdf of all sheets (you could change the clues); answer-sheet for teacher.
