Finding Fractions of amounts/quantities

This lesson/powerpoint explains the set by set process of finding the fraction of an amount, for example 2/3 of 9.

• It begins by explaining the parts of a fraction and how to represent then pictorially, with a practice activity.

• It then moves on to show how this links with finding the fraction of a number pictorially/using objects.

• Finally it shows the mathematically calculations involved, followed by pupil practice.

For a greater impact, split into three parts and ensure pupils are secure before moving on.

I created this lesson for my year 5 class with great success. After this lesson even the pupils who struggle could find the fraction of numbers.
