In this engaging lesson, children compare and contrast 3 female significant individuals from different eras: Florence Nightingale, Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg. This was taught towards the end of a Florence Nightingale unit of learning, and so some prior understanding about her life is advantageous.
The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey:
-Knowledge Recall - gauging what children already know about Florence Nightingale’s life;
-Using a research template and the resources available to them to find out about either Greta Thunberg or Malala Yousafzai;
-Presenting what they have learnt to other members of the class;
-Comparing and contrasting the life events and characteristics of the significant individuals;
-Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have demonstrated the learning objective and success criteria expectations.
Included is the comprehensive PowerPoint presentation (22 slides), and the research template (in both Word and PDF).
In the past, I have used this lesson with children in KS1 (years 1 and 2) - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for history. All images are licensed for commercial use.
