This is an Ergonomics project. I do it with year 7 but can be tweaked for all age groups. Can take from 8 weeks (double lessons) to 11 weeks. It can be stretched or decreased. Once the styrofoam model was created, students then 3d scanned and printed their prototypes. It is called the ergonomic mouse project, but i changed it to pointing device to stop design fixation of a traditional shape.
Brief: Students need to design and create a navigation device for a computer/laptop.

Outline: They use plasticine to mould a shape, take picture and insert into their books. They must hand their prototypes to a range of students in order to gain feedback. feedback is recorded and then they move on to the next design.

Included is:

  • A full scheme of work with learning objectives, lesson plans and differentiation.
  • Power Point presentation for lessons. PP include explanations for teachers and lesson objectives
  • An editable work booklet that students will use to answer questions, insert pictures and research.

This streamlines very well with the new Spec, it covers:
Ergonomics - Anthropometrics, Psychology and Physiology
Prototyping
Communication and feedback
Cutting, filing, using different grades of sanding and finishing.
CAD/CAM
