This is a stand alone lesson on The Halogens designed as an extended worksheet, or packet that doesn’t require IT access but will require a qualified chemistry teacher for the practical demonstration. The lesson was written for my mid-ability year 8 KS3 class and should take around 60 minutes to complete.
The lesson consists of a Do Now or Settler task that requires knowledge of the periodic table and specifically, Group 1 metals.
Lesson then asks students to look at data and identify patterns in Group 7 elements (an optional graph drawing activity could be included here as well). There is then a discussion about displacement reactions accompanied by a practical demonstration, and associated comprehension questions, about displacement reactions in Group 7.
Lesson ends with a plenary activity.
