A simple PowerPoint presentation that begins with students conducting an internet search for the term “social contract”. After this search is debriefed with the teacher, students complete a graphic organizer wherein they must note down the features of democratic and authoritarian states. This is then followed by a reading on the legitimacy of North Korea, to provide students a variety of perspectives for how different states legitimize their rule. The lesson concludes with a written task asking students to provide a description of the basis for legitimacy in their own country.
