Impact of tropical cyclones/hurricanes - Katrina case study

This is a GCSE lesson on effects of tropical cyclones using hurricane Katrina as a case study. Key facts about the lesson are:

1. The lesson first introduce students to some of the effects of hurricanes/cyclones/typhoons. Then it defines these effects as primary and secondary effects. There is a really good task for students to develop their understanding of these concepts.

2. The lesson then examine the effects of hurricane Katrina on New Orleans, USA. There is clever task that allow students to differentiate the effects under the categories of economic, social and environmental effects.

3. The lesson has a range of learning activities suitable to different types of learners; there are video clips to make real the effects of tropical cyclones, a picture study task, an interactive task to allow students to move around the room and share their learning and there is a numeracy task for those logical mathematical earners.
