An activity using a selection of sources about the Wright Brothers and a table to begin to use sources to gather evidence about a historical event.

I printed the different sources and put them on different tables around the room then told the children that there were a range of different sources that provide clues as to what happened on 17 December 1903.

Give the children a magnifying glass. Tell them that they are to go around to each source and use their inference skills to find clues about what might have happened.

  • Let’s look at this source, what can you see?
  • What information does this source tell us? (highlight who, what, where, when)
  • What does this source tell us about the Wright brothers?
  • Where do you think the sources came from?

Complete tables with information gained from sources in pairs. Choose the source that shows ‘Who/What/Where/When/How long’ and write down the information gained.
