This unit of work is great for KS3 classes. It includes:
-activities on how to identify key features of the genre
-class discussion and debate
-prioritisation tasks based on the '10 rules of detective fiction'
-annotation and analysis of classic detective stories
-the 4 detective stereotypes
-creating your own detective
-final assessment creative writing task
The SOW also provides differentiated objectives and outcomes, challenge tasks, writing frames an model examples.
There is also all the worksheets required to create a murder mystery lesson in your own classroom.
All you would need to provide are:
-some pieces of random evidence (any odd objects would do)
-masking tape outline of a body
-some police tape (optional)
I have taught this unit many times and is always one where students actually thank you for the lesson.
