Units of work for KS3 Geography, on the topics of ‘Population’ and ‘Migration’. Topics can be delivered independently/individually, or back-to-back as a comprehensive human geography study of both topics. The lessons are designed for delivery to Year 9 Geography/Humanities students, as a good preparation/foundation for the crucial Human Geography Theme 1 Unit of IGCSE Geography, which covers both topics in detail. However, I have also adapted the lessons and delivered them to Year 8 classes with great success in on many occasions.
Both units are highly adaptable in all aspects of delivery: duration, content and structure. Some lessons can be shortened, lengthened or removed as required to meet your curriculum needs. Population unit can be anything between 6-10 60 minute lessons, Migration unit can be anything between 6-12 60 minute lessons, as an approximate guide. Some lesson are suitable for 50 minutes to 1 hour of teaching time, but some can require two+ lessons to deliver – this is outlined in the lesson overview below. Includes Powerpoints, with supporting worksheets/resources for lessons including video links, online articles etc.
Active and independent learning are the cornerstones of these lessons. Plenty of IGCSE exam questions (with mark schemes) have been sprinkled into several of the lessons to give students a flavour of IGCSE Geography.
No additional resources are required. These are the lessons which I currently use to teach my students in a high-achieving High Performance Learning School, and are, therefore, of a very high quality and fully up-to-date. Lesson overview is as follows:
Population:
• L1 - My Place in the World
• L2 - Global Population & Me
• L3 – Birth Rates & Death Rates
• L4 – Population Explosion
• L5 – The Effects of BR & DR on Population (Challenge Lesson)
• L6 – Population Distribution & Density (2+ lessons)
• L7 – Megacities
• L8 – Urban Problems
Migration:
• L1 - Migration – Causes & Impacts (2 lessons)
• L2 - Rural-Urban Migration (2+ lessons)
• L3 - Forced Migration (2+ lessons)
Ample formative assessment opportunities provided throughout both units including: Extended writing pieces using PEEL-paragraph approach (x3), information poster on population distribution and density, infographic on a rural-urban migration case study and a case study of forced migration. If you’d like a summative assessment, I have created on one on the platform called ‘Socrative’. It consists of 50 questions related to both topics, and is self-marked so, therefore, saving us a lot of marking time :) Average scores in my classes historically are approx. 60% for this quiz/assessment. Email me (address below) if you’d like this quiz/assessment :)
The ‘preview’ images are screenshots of PowerPoint slides, worksheets, activities etc. taken from some of the lessons in the units. If you want more information please contact me on aidanannagh@hotmail.com and, if needed, we can arrange a video call where I can share some more :)
