This lesson describes the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis, focusing on the link to the light-independent reactions. The detailed PowerPoint and accompanying resources have been designed to cover the details included in point 5.7 of the Edexcel A-level Biology specification and therefore describes how light energy is trapped by exciting electrons in chlorophyll and the role of these electrons in generating ATP, reducing NADP in photophosphorylation and producing oxygen through photolysis of water.

This is a topic which students tend to find difficult so this lesson has been intricately planned to walk them through each of the key reactions in the light-dependent stage. Time is taken to describe the roles of the major protein complexes that are embedded in the thylakoid membrane and this includes the two photosystems, the proton pump and ATP synthase. A series of exam-style questions have been written that link to other biological topics in this course such as cell structure and membrane transport as well as application questions to challenge them to apply their understanding. Some of these resources have been differentiated to allow students of differing abilities to access the work and to be pushed at the same time. Students will learn that there are two pathways that the electron can take from PSI and at the completion of the two tasks which describe each of these pathways, they will understand how ATP is generated in non-cyclic and cyclic fashion. The final task of the lesson asks them to compare these two forms of photophosphorylation to check that they understand when photolysis is involved and reduced NADP is formed.

Due to the detail included in this lesson, it is estimated that it will take in excess of 2.5 hours of allocated A-level teaching time to complete

Topic 5: On the wild side (Edexcel A-level Biology A)

As the first topic to be taught at the start at the second year of the Pearson Edexcel A-level Biology A (Salters Nuffield) course, topic 5 is very important and the content includes the key reaction of photosynthesis. All 10 lessons included in this bundle are highly detailed and have been filled with a wide variety of tasks which will engage and motivate the students whilst covering the following specification points: * Understand the terms ecosystem, community, population and habitat * The numbers and distribution of organisms in a habitat are controlled by biotic and abiotic factors * The concept of niche * The stages of succession from colonisation to climax community * The overall reaction of photosynthesis * The phosphorylation of ADP and the hydrolysis of ATP * The light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis * The light-independent reactions of photosynthesis * The products of the Calvin cycle * The structure of the chloroplasts and the role of this organelle in photosynthesis * Be able to calculate net primary productivity * Know the relationship between NPP, GPP and R * The effect of temperature on the rate of enzyme activity * Isolation reduces gene flow and leads to allopatric and sympatric speciation If you would like to sample the quality of the lessons in this bundle, then download the light-independent reactions and isolation and speciation lessons as these have been uploaded for free

Photosynthesis & Respiration (Edexcel A-level Biology A)

Photosynthesis and respiration are two of the most commonly assessed topics in A-level exams but are often poorly understood by students. These 9 lessons have been intricately planned to contain a wide range of activities that will engage and motivate the students whilst covering the key detail to try to deepen their understanding and includes exam-style questions so they are fully prepared for these assessments. The following specification points in topics 5 and 7 of the Pearson Edexcel A-level Biology A (Salters Nuffield) specification are covered by these lessons: * Understand the overall reaction of photosynthesis * Understand the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis including the role of these electrons in generating ATP, reducing NADP in photophosphorylation and producing oxygen through photolysis of water * Understand the light-independent reactions as reduction of carbon dioxide using the products of the light-dependent reactions * Know that the products are simple sugars that are used by plants, animals and other organisms in respiration and the synthesis of new biological molecules * Understand the structure of chloroplasts in relation to their role in photosynthesis * Understand the overall reaction of aerobic respiration * Understand that respiration is a many-stepped process with each step controlled and catalysed by a specific intracellular enzyme * Understand the roles of glycolysis in aerobic and anaerobic respiration * Understand the role of the link reaction and the Krebs cycle in the complete oxidation of glucose and formation of carbon dioxide, ATP, reduced NAD and reduced FAD * Understand how ATP is synthesised by oxidative phosphorylation * Understand what happens to lactate after a period of anaerobic respiration in animals If you would like to sample the quality of the lessons in this bundle then download the light independent reactions, the link reaction and Krebs cycle and the fate of lactate lessons as these have been shared for free

Photosynthesis (Edexcel A-level Biology A)

The 4 lesson PowerPoints included in this bundle are highly detailed and along with their accompanying resources, they have been designed to engage and motivate the students whilst the Pearson Edexcel A-level Biology A (Salters Nuffield) specification points concerning photosynthesis are covered. These specification points are 5.5, 5.7, 5.8 (i) & (ii) and 5.9 and these state that students should: * Understand the overall reaction of photosynthesis as requiring energy from light to split apart the strong bonds in water molecules, storing the hydrogen in a fuel (glucose) by combining it with carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. * Understand the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis including how light energy is trapped by exciting electrons in chlorophyll and the role of these electrons in generating ATP, reducing NADP in photophosphorylation and producing oxygen through photolysis of water * Understand the light-independent reactions as reduction of carbon dioxide using the products of the light-dependent reactions (carbon fixation in the Calvin cycle, the role of GP, GALP, RuBP and RUBISCO). * Know that the products are simple sugars that are used by plants, animals and other organisms in respiration and the synthesis of new biological molecules (polysaccharides, amino acids, lipids and nucleic acids). * Understand the structure of chloroplasts in relation to their role in photosynthesis. If you would like to sample the quality of these lessons, then please download the light-independent reactions lesson as this has been shared for free
