I am designing a series of phonics books intended to help children learn to read. At the moment, I am building up the resource bank from phase 2, but I intend to include some phase 1 resources in the future.

The series is designed to be simple and focused on introducing one new sound or tricky word at a time in order to avoid overwhelming an emerging reader, which I believe a lot of currently available phonics books do, e.g. “pink” level books containing multi-syllable words.

Through its accessibility, I believe this series will be more effective and efficient at improving children’s reading skills.

This third book in the series re-visits the sounds “s”, “a”, “t”, “p” and “i” but this time we introduce short phrases and sentences. The subsequent books will cover ONE new sound or ONE new tricky word at a time. This way the series can be used for intervention purposes as well as practising specific skills.

I have decided to split the “i” sound between two books (a and b) to maintain the “one new thing at a time” approach. Book A only covers single words, whereas Book B introduces phrases and sentences for the first time.

The book includes 10 activities ranging from reading syllables to reading short phrase captions, writing short phrases and beginning to use some sentence punctuation.
