Portraits - focus artists: Frida Kahlo (Mexican Artist) and Yumasa Morimura
Portraiture offers a unique opportunity for students to explore the human experience. By capturing the likeness of a person, artists have the ability to convey their subject’s personality, emotions, and even their inner thoughts and feelings.

This is a 5-10 week project depending on student’s skills and knowledge. There is an overview that outlines a series of activities:
Step by step presentation on how to draw the proportions of the face (PPT and PDF format for printing)
Step by step presentationon how to draw the the facial features (PPT and PDF format for printing)
Presentation and PDF of Frida Kahlo’s painting “Hummingbird with thorn necklace”. Students will make a study of this.
Presentation and final summative task for a self-portrait referenced by student photograph. This assignment links in with Yumasa Morimura and cultural appropriation.
