Prepositions - word mat and sentence builder

This resource includes a sentence builder for a setting description and a preposition word mat.

The sentence builder uses a range of prepositions and descriptions that can be cut and matched to each other to create different descriptive sentences e.g.

All around, beautiful mermaids danced and sang.

This resource is appropriate for:

• introducing prepositions
• creating a ‘WAGOLL’ setting description
• Fronted Adverbials lesson.
• Building vocabulary for noun phrases.

The sentence builder allows children to build their vocabulary while also seeing how prepositions can be used to create a better image of a setting. The examples also use noun phrases to help strengthen children’s understanding and use of these.

This is appropriate for all abilities as children who are less confident can continue to use the examples and make different sentences by matching the prepositions to other given clauses.

While the word mat can be used to challenge more able children to create their own sentences using the prepositions.

The sentences are based on a setting description of Atlantis.
