This resource features a base sheet with a line drawn illustration showing the different layers within the Amazon rainforest habitat/biome. This can be built on, using the additional sheets provided, by naming layers, sorting their characteristics and adding the appropriate Amazonian animals to each layer.
It provides a flexible worksheet that could be used over several sessions as needed.
It can also be used within different curriculum areas such as, habitats and biomes, environmental adaptations and evolution, and South America.
Various sizes and formats are provided to provide extra choice for group or individual use, personal preference or print budget :)
The illustrations can also be coloured in by students.
This resource includes:

  • The base worksheet, featuring an illustration of the layers within a cross section of the Amazon rainforest. The division of the four layers is marked on the worksheet. The worksheet is provided in three formats, A3, A4 and A3 with the A4 illustration to one side of the sheet.
  • Sheet showing the names of the rainforest layers and their characteristics, to cut out and stick to the base layer. There are four layers featured, Emergent, Canopy, Understorey and Forest Floor. There are also 19 individual definitions that can be sorted and attached to the correct forest layer. These definitions refer to the plant, animal and climate characteristics of each layer. This sheet is in A3 and A4 sizes.
  • Sheet of line drawn illustrations of rainforest animals. These are specifically animals which would be found in the Amazonian rainforest. The animals can be cut out, sorted and attached to the appropriate layers of the worksheet. All animals are named, from a variety of classification areas, and aim to highlight some of the adaptations which enable them to live in a particular layer of the forest. 24 animals in total. A3 and A4 sheets.
  • Information/answer sheet for teachers. This also provides additional information about the animals, which could be used in classroom discussions when placing animals and discussing their adaptations.
