This is an assembly/lesson presentation about St. Andrew’s Day celebrated on 30 November and its connection to Scotland.

There are are teachers’ notes to guide you through the assembly. Slides are referred to.

Aimed at: KS1/Lower KS2

It is a 54-Slide PowerPoint Presentation divided into different sections with supporting worksheets/activities.

Learning Objectives: To learn about St. Andrew and how he became the patron saint of Scotland.

Pupils learn:
• St. Andrew was one of the twelve disciples
• Why is he the patron saint of Scotland
• Scotland’s flag which features the saltire
• The Declaration of Arbroath – St. Andrew’s connection - Useful Slides (you can edit out)
• Various legends surrounding St. Andrew’s Day – St. Rule (Regulus), Pictish King Angus mac Fergus, Bishop Acca of Hexham
• How the thistle became Scotland’s national flower
• St. Andrew’s Day celebrations in different countries
• How Scotland celebrates – traditional food, dance, music and parades
Optional videos links to watch (BBC for younger audiences) – Video 1 (4 mins) and Video 2 (8 mins) – showing how two brothers celebrate St. Andrew’s Day in Scotland from their point of view.
• Reflection – pupils are asked to recap on the assembly/lesson via pictures on Slide 50
• Pupils reflect on how to be kind and thoughtful
• Optional prayer to finish assembly/lesson

There are questions to ask during assembly – interaction with the pupils.

Additional Work or use as homework for consolidation:

  • Reading comprehension - (2 pages - 9 questions with suggested answers)
  • Observational drawing of Scotland’s national flower - you can bring in a real thistle or use the picture.
  • Colour in and answer questions about the saltire activity
  • Match pictures to labels activity – Scotland’s traditional dishes
  • Match pictures to description of traditional dishes activity
  • Word Search with Solution

File Type: PowerPoint Presentation, Word Format and PDF. It is also in a zip file (Just right click and extract files).
You can edit the presentation to suit your class or assembly group.
