A selection of 12 key targets with over 60 related actions to help English language learners set their own meaningful SMART targets. This is a resource I have developed to help my students focus in on specific areas they wish to improve and actions they can take to do this as well as meeting the needs of my FE institution which requires SMART targets for all learners in their ILPs.

I read the previous review but despite that went ahead and purchased the resource because I was struggling with reading targets. <br /> We follow the city and guild exam board so the general methods to improve your reading skills are not smart targets. We need more specific targets based on the requirements of the exams - text types, purposes, reading for information etc. Unfortunately the sample stopped just after the ‘improve my reading skills’ so although I was expecting more smart targets once I purchased the resource, there weren’t any – it’s a shame that I’ve now spent £3 on 3 pages of A4 but have made no progress with coming up with reading targets. There are other free, school-based resources available online to improve reading skills which provided more help, but I came to TES thinking it would provide more useful educational resources - given that the resource is titled ‘ESOL’ I was expecting this to be tailored to ESOL learners based on the different exam boards, but this was not the case.
I'm disappointed. I was hoping for some good ideas for SMART targets for my adult ESOL learners, but these ideas wouldn't be considered up to standard at our college as they are not specific enough. Our college want things like, "Write 3 sentences using present simple" not very general actions or behaviours like, "I'm going to get a book from the library and practise past simple." I feel that I've wasted my money as I won't be able to make use of the targets. At least it was only £3.
