THE PENGUINS OF ANTARCTICA - PART 2 - THE EMPERORS OF THE ICE SHELF

The Emperor Penguin is the largest of the Antarctic species. It is found closest to the South Pole. The female lays eggs during late Autumn into Winter and the male attends to the eggs while the female hunts. Take your students onto the ice shelf in the Weddell Sea and join those who encountered a visit by a lone Emperor penguin. Then find out why this penguin is able to withstand the extremes of the southern hemisphere winter. The attachments will give your students hard copies as a record of the Emperor penguins. If possible show your students one of the suggested videos about the life of Emperor penguins. The Emperors face one of the most challenging environments in which to survive. You might extend this unit to consider global threat to their longer term survival.
