The Personal Narrative Essay

This resource contains four PowerPoint lessons on brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing a personal narrative essay. It includes graphic organizers differentiated by student level, as well as a checklist for peer review.
It introduces students to this genre of writing, how a personal narrative is structured, and introduces them to the writing process (brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising & editing, and publishing). It includes skills work related to narrative point of view, sequencing, sensory language, and descriptive details (simile, metaphor, personification, strong verbs, & colorful adjectives). It introduces students to skills to help develop the characters in their essays (dialogue, description, reaction). It also covers how to write a good introduction and conclusion. Students will also engage in peer review of their personal narratives. It includes graphic organizers to guide them through the writing process, a checklist for peer review, as well as a template to help students draft their personal narrative essays.
