This is a 37 slide, fully-resourced sequence of lessons focusing on the title character in The Woman in Black. (Follows on from my ‘The Woman in Black: Intro to Gothic Fiction’ PPT). Created for KS3 but easily adapted for higher abilities. This scheme uses extracts from the text but also works if reading the story as a whole.

Includes:

  • A lesson on superstitious beliefs in the early 1900s and Arthur’s frustration with the ‘dark mutterings’ of the villagers in Crythin Gifford.
  • An activity revising the key language techniques.
  • A lesson analysing the description of the woman in black at Mrs. Drablow’s funeral with an accompanying PETAL paragraph task (EXT. task to draw and label this woman with key detail from the text and to predict her connection to Mrs. Drablow).
  • A lesson exploring the ‘solemn’ children lined up outside the church and Mr. Jerome’s reaction to the mention of the woman in black stood at the graveside.
