From the mainland the settlement on the tidal island of Mont Saint Michel is spectacular. Leave your vehicle in the car park on the mainland and walk or catch the shuttle bus across to the island and you can enter through the gates into the small village and experience a sense of this place of history. Talk a walk on the pathways on the top of the protective walls. Climb the hundreds of steps up to the church on the summit of the rocky foundations. This is an island of scenic appeal. It is also an island linked with French history. Walk into the church and appreciate the grandeur and the architecture.Visit one or more of the museums and gain an understanding of the changes throughout its history. All this explains why this island and its human developments meets the requirements of its classification as a World Heritage Site.
