This groundbreaking toolkit for Primary schools has been produced by Turner Contemporary (Margate) and Turner Prize-winning arts/architects’ collective, Assemble and published by Five10Twelve for CulturalPlacemaking.
The toolkit include more than 30 activities, creative/play-based sessions, warm-up sessions and reflective exercises which support and empower young children to:
- Develop critical thinking and research skills
- Build confidence, self-expression and leadership skills
- Connect with and explore their home town and its heritage
- Understand the built environment and think about how towns work
- Think about the role of art, public art and creativity
- Develop and express civic pride / pride in place
The Manual for Child-led Placemaking builds on learning and sessions delivered through an 18 month project, led by Assemble and Turner Contemporary, which culminated in two groups of primary schoolchildren developing a brief, interviewing and commissioning world-renowned artist, Conrad Shawcross, to produce a new public art sculpture to their brief for their hometown.
