A set of problem solving and reasoning worksheets to use alongside the White Rose Maths scheme. The questions have been differentiated 3 ways, each with an individual sheet of questions for that level. Answers are also included.
This set of worksheets is for Year 4, Spring Block 1 (Multiplication and Division), focusing on the second small step of multiplying 3 numbers. Details of how it has been differentiated can be found below:
• 1 Star sheet (Working Towards Expected Level): Be able to use the associative law to group numbers in order to multiply 3 numbers from the 1 times table up to and including the 5 times table.
• 2 Star sheet (Expected Level): Be able to use the associative law to group numbers in order to multiply 3 numbers from the 1 times table up to and including the 12 times table.
• 3 Star sheet (Working at greater depth): Be able to use the associative law to group numbers in order to multiply 3 numbers from the 1 times table up to and beyond the 12 times table.
Each worksheet contains a total of 8 questions, some broken down into parts (a, b, c etc.). These questions can be used as a quick starter and cut up so that only the first 4 questions are used, or given as more of a main activity with all 8 questions. They could also be used for partner work, depending on the ability of the children.

Absurdly difficult calculations for Year 4 Expected level, when you consider that in this WR planning cycle, the children have not been taught to use factors yet, (it's the next step) nor short multiplication of one-digit numbers by three-digits, nor short division (these are scheduled for later this term!) They had to work out 144 divided by 18, without factors or division techniques! This was the first question, and my bright kids got stuck here. Then they were faced with 343 divided by 49. 7 x 7 x ? = 343 This is Year 6, knowing cubes of numbers, not Year 4 ES. Later questions were more suitable, but the first two were so ridiculously unsuited to their learning at this stage of the year, that they never got to them. Fortunately, my kids are resilient, but I hate having to apologise for giving them unsuitable resources - I should not have trusted these so blindly. The three-star Greater Depth were very similar numbers as the ES but with extra tens thrown in. This is not the right way to differentiate between ES and GD, making 11 x 3 x 7 into 11 x 13 x 7. There is an error on the three-star sheet on question 3 too. Really disappointing and annoyed I wasted my money.
