The Montgomery coral reef is unique. Early explorers indicated that it appeared to rise out of the sea. They witnessed cascades of water issuing from the reef and reported a range of wildlife in the area. Along the east coast Australia has the more photographed and better known Barrier Reef with associated life adjusting to tidal variations of about 2-3 metres. The Montgomery Reef experiences tidal variations of between 8 to 10 metres. If you are looking for a study to interest students, take them into the channel between the reef and, by video experience what happens as the sea level fluctuates from high level when the reef is covered and changes as the tide level falls. You can use this as a standalone package; an example of coastal formations or as part of the Kimberley coast series. The Aboriginal presence around the reef and nearby islands provides a mystery . Maybe your students will have ideas about possible reasons for the disappearance of this group.
