This 5 session guided reading unit is all about diary entries. The included text is based on the diary of a ghost, including descriptive vocabulary.

Great to study across a week or half term, these sessions are based around reading the text together as a whole class (or group) and predicting, clarifying vocabulary and exploring the text.

Children will build up a knowledge of the features and language used in a diary entry. Excitingly, this diary entry does not give away that a ghost has written it, but leads children to figure it out for themselves.

Learning objectives:

  1. To understand the features and structure of a diary entry and to infer the feelings and motives of the writer.
  2. To infer the meaning and mood of a diary entry and to make predictions based on the text and illustrations.
  3. To analyse the language and imagery of a diary entry and to write a comprehension question based on the text.
  4. To evaluate the writer’s perspective and feelings in a diary entry and to compare it with other diary entries.
  5. To synthesise the information and ideas from a diary entry and to write a creative diary entry from a different perspective.
