This is a 5-10 day unit of work for teaching Position and Direction objectives in year 2. The children will love the Mr Whirligig character and his inherent dizziness and silliness, who will guide them through this great fun unit of work!

Day 1 introduces the children to ordinal numbers in a fun and engaging way. Mr Whirligig and his friends in a queue.
Day 2 uses grid references to describe position. Find Mr Whirligig and his friends (game) and use grid references to find items.
Day 3 gets the children compass directions to describe…well direction. Mr Whirligig and his friends are lost in the woods!
Day 4 focusses on right-angle turns clockwise and anti-clockwise. Help Mr Whirligig find his lost items.
Day 5 involves writing instructions, including turns, to guide Mr Whirligig to one of his friends’ houses.
Objectives Covered:
Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise)
