I started off by showing the group the Jim Carrey 2009 version of the film, and getting them to write notes about the plot. This lesson, I put them into groups and they had to analyse the presentation of Scrooge, and then write about it.

A task to get students to think about register they would use for different audiences and purposes. In pairs or individually, give each student a card with a technique, picture and scenario, and get them to write an example. Then, get students to mark each other's and give improvement. If time, get students to have another go with other cards and work on their green pen target.

A lesson designed for high ability GCSE studying AQA A Christmas Carol - explores purpose and function of Fezziwig, as well as language analysis and links to context.

A lesson exploring the context around A Midsummer Night’s Dream - including the traditions of Midsummer Night and May Day, and a little about the inclusion of Elizabeth I in the play.

The third lesson in a year 8 scheme (adaptable for other years) which explores the initial interaction between Egeus and Theseus. Continues with looking at ideas to do with the patriarchy and gender.

I watched the film first with my class so that they could get to grips with the plot. With other groups, I have found this useful in being able to get a deeper analysis as they are not struggling to comprehend the plot. Also, it is useful for teaching foreshadowing etc.

An assessment sheet to support a very weak low ability year 9 class to answer a question on Lady Macbeth in Act 1, Scene 5. One sheet has slightly less support on than the other - but I found this to be really useful for weak students still not comfortable with writing confidently about literature.

This is the outline of a very detailed scheme of work for year 7 - creative writing. Each week has a specific focus, eg. character. Each week also asks you to rag rate the student - I have uploaded an example of that - each week you can just adapt that to the skills you want to assess depending on the group you teach.

Lesson designed to get them to think about the contrast between F and S - e.g. cold and loneliness in opposition to family; 2 different attitudes to Christmas; representation of Fred as family and therefore showing how Scrooge makes choices to prolong his misery.
