EYFS Maths Planning - White Rose/Numberblocks based - 12 weeks

(5)
12 weeks of Maths planning for the Autumn Term in Reception. The plans are based on White Rose and Numberblocks approaches and are fully editable, featuring assessment points from Development Matters and continuous provision opportunities. We focus mainly on number recognition to 10 in the Autumn term, as well as comparing length and introducing 2D shapes. The planning features 60 separate Maths sessions, and as such can easily be continued into the Spring term for settings that prefer a different pace or who may choose to repeat sessions for further consolidation. Resources that I use alongside this planning are also available for purchase in my store. Spring Term planning is now available here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/white-rose-numberblocks-maths-planning-spring-term-eyfs-12196549

Number Hunt to 20 - Numeral Recognition Activity

(0)
A Powerpoint presentation that comprises ten different scenes - each with the numbers 1-20 hidden within them. This has proved really successful within my Early Years setting to develop and secure numeral recognition. We often use it as a Maths Starter activity and it has engaged pupils very well. Some scenes are more challenging than others, though it consistently surprises me how much better children are at spotting the numbers than adults! There are lots of different ways of using this resource to ensure appropriate pitch and challenge: We write the numbers 1-20 on our class board and tick them off as we find them in the pictures. Ensuring that we search for the numbers in order has really helped to secure number sense. We ask children to describe where the numbers are, supporting them to use positional language and to develop their speaking and listening skills, e.g. “The number 20 is next to/on top of/underneath the table”. Children can write the numbers on their own whiteboards and work on the activity individually - this way they also get practice of writing the numerals. We provide a checklist for children to tick them off themselves as we search for the numbers together as a whole class, supporting children to ‘match’ the numbers as we develop early number sense. We have often found that children are inspired to go and create their own ‘number hunt’ pictures independently after our Maths sessions, which then provides lots of evidence for our Learning Journeys and ensures that learning is embedded. A 1-10 Number Hunt activity is also available for purchase in my store.

Talk Homework - Editable Template

Talk Homework - Editable Template

(0)
We have used Talk Homework in my Early Years setting with great success. We send home this template each week with a different question for parents to discuss with their children. Questions may be related to something we have done in class that week, gathering prior knowledge for a new topic or an opportunity to discuss life at home. For example, “We made pancakes in class this week! Can your child tell you how/why we made them? Can they tell you about any other special occasions that people celebrate?” The template features a graphic outlining the ‘rules’ of Talk Homework for parents - e.g. turn off the TV, write down exactly what your child says, give them thinking time etc. It includes an editable text box for your own questions, and further space for parents to write down their child’s response.

Numicon Shape Matching Pictures

Numicon Shape Matching Pictures

(0)
A selection of 5 images designed for actual size Numicon pieces. Children match Numicon pieces to the pictures (A4 size) or experiment further with numbers by choosing alternative combinations of filling in each picture. An optional recording sheet is also included within the download to encourage pupils to record which shapes they used and to add them together to find the total. These are great for differentiated learning - LA pupils can focus on matching shapes while HA pupils can extend to number bonds and addition. The students in my Reception class loved these sheets and would often choose to write down the numeral next to each shape that they used on the original picture sheet, and then count all holes to find the total, recording in whichever way they chose. There are lots of possibilities to explore and secure number sense.

Two classroom timers (2 minutes and 5 minutes). Children must complete an activity before the jar fills up with marbles. Great for tidy up time in the Early Years, other simple classroom activities or for building an understanding of time.
