Gothic sentences can be quite tricky, but this lesson support students in analysing Gothic fiction extracts for sentence types (simple, complex, compound) before students create their own descriptions of Gothic settings and peer assess their work based around the use of sentence types analysed during the lesson. A very useful lesson for both KS3 and KS4 students.

The lesson helps students to analyse key quotes, make interpretations around the main characters and how they are presented, to evaluate the use of language features and to make notes on answering a GCSE style assessment task. As we study Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, we look at how the characters and themes develop in Chapter Three and then use the extract between Lennie and Curley as a stimulus for creative or narrative writing.
