A grade 8 model response comparing how conflict with nature is presented in Prelude and Storm on the Island. I’d give it a mark at the top of Band 5 24/30 which I predict is around grade 8. It is well-structured, thoughtful, detailed and developed with apt evidence. To reach Grade 9 it needs to be more critical and exploratory with more convincing exploration of alternative interpretations and contectual factors. A lesson for exploring Storm on the Island in the Power and Conflict AQA anthology. Step 1: Students use the hint questions to prompt them to gain an independent understanding of the poem. Step 2: Read through the answer and complete. Step 3: Questions to test understanding of new annotations. Step 4: Review by creating thesis statement about Heaney’s purpose.

Essential to help with the closed book poetry exam, this revision sheet contains 5 key quotations from each poem in the Power and Conflict section of the anthology. It asks students to make notes on the significance of each quotation. Also includes an answer sheet for teachers with some notes about why I selected each quotation. Also includes an audio/video recording of the answers. Also includes a blank grid for students who want to select their own 5 quotations to memorise for the closed book examination. Students must write a brief note to explain why each note is important. It is a useful exercise for making students revise their annotations.

Resource aimed at getting students to think more consciously about how they combine simple, compound and complex sentences within their sentences. Students respond to each image by following the suggested order of simple, compound and complex sentences. They can then review each paragraph to think about the function of each sentence type within the paragraph.

3 lessons on Stave 3 of A Christmas Carol Lesson 1: Introductory lesson covering the main events, quotations and big ideas in Stave 3 with accompanying worksheet. Lessons 2: Using 5 carefully selected short extracts, students are encouraged to select precise quotations (A01), analyse language choices (A02) and make wider links to context (A03) to explore how Dickens presents ideas about Christmas in Stave 3. The 5 extracts are coloured to allow for a differentiated group carousel activity. This resource contains the worksheets and a powerpoint for 1-2 lessons with learning outcomes for exploring how Dickens presents ideas about Christmas in Stave 3 of A Christmas Carol. Just a bank of ambitious vocabulary for creative writing.

A fully differentiated and potentially outstanding lesson offering various levels of differentiation. It invites students to explore 5 ways Scrooge is presented in Stave 1: outsider, uncharitable, miser, isolated and lacking festive spirit. Starter: Students annotate the 2 model paragraphs about Scrooge using the differentiated bronze, silver, gold criteria that links to the A01, A02, A03 mark scheme. Main: Students work in 5 groups. They each complete their paragraph based on their individual question. After this students carousel to share the answers. Plenary: Students understand the AQA mark scheme and grade their work against the English Literature criteria. Lesson 2: Recap 28 key quotations from Stave 1.

This resource contains 15 AQA style exam questions for Power and Conflict - one for each poem. There is a grid to help students create two lines or argument for comparing the poems. The grid contains information about power, conflict, key quotations, structure and context for each poem. A PowerPoint is also included to help model how to plan lines of argument on the interactive whiteboard. Also includes 4 differentiated writing frames to 4 actual AQA power and conflict past exam questions. Each writing frame has 3 tiers of difficulty to allow for the fact different students in the class require different levels of support and guidance in the run up to the examinations. Tier 1: Students add the analysis of the quotations. The topic sentences and recommended quotations are already filled in for them. Tier 2: Students must pick their own 3 quotations from each poem and analyse the quotations. Tier 3: Students must pick their own topic sentences, quotations and then analsyse the quotations. PowerPoint for an exam walk-through looking at the AQA Question from May 2017. Differentiated starter: define the key words linked to male aggression and make links. Main: Analyse 5 key extracts that demonstrate male aggression with a focus on A01 and A02. Suggested answers are on the PowerPoint to guide students through each extract. Plenary: Draw a line graph to chart the intensity of male aggression across the play.
