Character flashcards for the 6 main characters in the play. Each flashcard contains explanations for 5 quotations. There are also a series of high-level adjectives to describe each character.

A grade 9 response on the theme of greed in A Christmas Carol. It includes a thesis style introduction. Point 1 explores the Marley’s Ghost section. Point 2 explores the Belle section. 100 comprehension questions on A Christmas Carol. 20 questions on each Stave that is useful to use at the end of scheme of work to test students’ understanding of the novella. All the questions are in chronological order. I have put them all onto one A3 sheet to allow for easy printing. I have also included an answer sheet for students to mark the quiz themselves. NEW: Also contains the questions in the form of a board game. Also includes analysis of the top 10 single words to analyse in the novella with high level explanations of how to zoom in and then how to zoom out to explore Dickens’ authorial purpose.

Knowledge Organiser for Lord of the Flies along with a PowerPoint slide that contains questions explaining how students should use the knowledge organiser to revise each character’s development in the novel. I have selected crossover quotations that link to both characters and themes. I have also included some ideas for how to approach A03 context for each character and theme. The second page has a blank version of the knowledge organiser. I ask students to fill as much of the blank one in as they can and then show them my answers at the end.

Lesson and resources to help students produce a high quality response on the character of Eva Smith. Eva Smith essay planning sheet with answers for AQA 1-9 An Inspector Calls style question. The planning sheet contains perceptive points with carefully selected quotations and space for students to make deeper insights into language and theme. This is aimed at students with a target grade of 7-9. There is also a PowerPoint version aimed at students with a target grade of 4-5.

Complete lesson analysing Fred’s character in A Christmas Carol. Differentiated starter activity. Detailed annotation of 8 key Fred quotations with 4 detailed inferences for each quotation. The annotations are animated to appear one by one so you can talk them through. Students are then given a model paragraph and asked to use their notes to write the next paragraph(s). The plenary invites students to consider the strengths and weaknesses of Dickens’ characterisation and asks students to think about Fred’s one-dimensionality.

A planning sheet and example grade 7 response answering the following exam-style extract-based question on Macbeth. Starting with this extract from Act 4 Scene 2, how does Shakespeare present women in the play? Also includes some annotations to help students see the positive features of the response.

A lesson aimed at getting lower ability students to use more ambitious vocabulary. Students think of synonyms for ‘nice’ and ‘bad’ and then use the words to write a positive and negative holiday postcard. The main task where students redraft and improve the model paragraphs is differentiated. Tough: Students replace the boring adjective with better choices. Tougher: Students also replace the boring ‘The’ sentence starts. Toughest: Students change the structure of the sentences and add in similes and a full range of punctuation.

4 differentiated writing frames to 4 actual AQA power and conflict past exam questions. Each writing frame has 3 tiers of difficulty to allow for the fact different students in the class require different levels of support and guidance in the run up to the examinations. Tier 1: Students add the analysis of the quotations. The topic sentences and recommended quotations are already filled in for them. Tier 2: Students must pick their own 3 quotations from each poem and analyse the quotations. Tier 3: Students must pick their own topic sentences, quotations and then analsyse the quotations. This revision lesson includes 9 possible exam questions for English language paper 2 writing. For each task, students are asked to come up with 3 ideas and to write an effective opening paragraph. The starter activity asks students to analyse 9 effective openings to letters, articles and speeches.
