Science reading comprehension can be engaging! This reading comprehension for science discusses the topic of how digestion system works. Along with the reading passage are science reading comprehension worksheets, containing questions that align with the reading passage. There is also an application question to get the students showcasing their understanding.
I have made this activity for my foundation tier year 10 students studying AQA GCSE Combined Science. As such, the content aligns with that specification. However, I do believe it would also be suitable for a high attaining KS3 group in year 8 or 9.
My passion for science literacy is what has lead me to develop a range of science reading comprehension worksheet, as it is important for students to be able to access nonfiction reading comprehension outside of their English lessons.
This lesson plan is designed to get students enjoying reading about science and applying what they have learned.
The focus of the passage is the journey food takes through the digestive system, including answering such questions as:
What is digestion system?
How digestion system works?
Where does the digestive system begin?
Where does the digestive process start?
What is the digestive system importance?
What are foods good for digestion system?
Which part of the digestive system absorbs water?
Included in this resource is:
Digestion System reading passage (3 pages)
Student worksheet (2 pages)
Exit Ticket
Lesson plan (1 page)
Teacher reflection (1 page)
Ideas for using this resource:
Team work: they read together and work together on the questions
As a part of a literacy centre
Individual task: for early finishers/as homework
Class task: taking it in turns to read together, before completing the worksheets in pairs/individually
I hope you enjoy this activity - keep an eye out for more Biology reading comprehension passages with activities coming soon!
