They like to work independently, either alone, in pairs or in small groups, challenging themselves and each other to progress through the challenges. In general, sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. Word searches are easily differentiated too. In this set, there are five Spanish to Spanish grids, with the Spanish words as prompts. Students then find them in Spanish in the grid. A great way of really consolidating vocabulary is to get students to complete the word list on the grid sheet too. There are also five English to Spanish grids. With these, the prompt words are in English, so students have to know the correct Spanish word in order to find it in the grid. There's a word list to complete on these too. As the challenge increases, the words appear in an increasing number of different directions, and students can identify which directions they're looking for by referring to the arrow key on each grid. The word searches are in landscape format, and each grid has a corresponding answer key, which provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, helping them develop more independence in their learning. As they learn more colours, their answers become more varied. I tend to introduce the plural form with the connective und (and) quite quickly, so that children can extend their answers as much as they possibly can - they have great fun seeing who knows the most colours, and can create the longest answers. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of animals in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning. They enjoy being able to work and learn independently, and I give them regular chances during the school year to play. The focus is on 99 high-frequency GERMAN verbs in the infinitive form. There are 3 games, each with a differentiated level of challenge. CHILLOUT CHALLENGE features the verbs in alphabetical order, GERMAN to English CHAMPION CHALLENGE features the verbs in topsy-turvy order, GERMAN to English SUPERCHARGED CHALLENGE features the verbs in topsy-turvy order, ENGLISH to GERMAN - your students will really have to know their GERMAN verbs to complete this sequence in record time! I’ve included reference sheets of all verbs in both alphabetical and topsy-turvy order for students to use as a learning support resource.
