I’ve found that giving students regular and frequent opportunities to play with the cards, not only when we’re focusing on these particular vocab groups, but across the school year, and even when they’re far more advanced in their learning - all learners benefit from going back to the start! There’s definitely some prep involved - printing, laminating and cutting out - laminating is certainly worth the effort, as the cards are a lot more learner-friendly, and do last for years. Students don’t have to play with full sets - they can work with selected vocab groups. There is an 18-page workbook for each set, which gives students a different way of consolidating their vocabulary - writing it out really helps to embed language, and is great for spelling too. There are 3 differentiated recall and write challenges, as well as a full alphabetical French-English vocabulary list, which works well as a longer-term reference resource too. My students learn a lot from applying their French practically with the game card templates - they enjoy creating cards for each other. Some of the resources overlap learning stages, though I’ve found that students, regardless of ages, often benefit from, and genuinely enjoy, working with activities that are primarily designed for other ability or knowledge stages. This may be either as practice and revision, or as additional or more accessible and manageable challenge. These factors are all key to motivating learners to engage with, and progress in, a new language. There’s certainly prep work involved with some of the resources – I always laminate my language and challenge cards for example, as they’re much more easy to manipulate, and so far more learner-friendly. They do however last in excellent condition for years, so for me, laminating is definitely worth the prep time and extra expense. You don’t have to prepare them all at once – the resources are definitely useful for the longer-term, so you can take your time with the prep, focusing on what you’re working with at any specific stage. Over time, I’ve created activity folders with ready-made resources in, and give my students free-choice time – alone, in pairs or small groups. They decide what they’d like to work on for half an hour or so, and sometimes even a full lesson. We do this pretty regularly, as it’s great for keeping language fresh, and ideal for both consolidation and revision. Additionally, and equally importantly, it helps students develop independent learning skills, moving away from teacher-led learning, and gives them real insight into their own learning progress. I often play too - students really do enjoy it when I join in, and they seem to work that little harder on their concentration, reading out loud and pronunciation. Students walk around the room, talking to each other in their best French accent, sharing the information on their cards, until they have arranged the cards in the correct order. The game is also really successful when we play in teams against a timer, regularly over a longer-term series of lessons - students love to see if they can beat their own time record, as well as the other teams. The competitive element is a great motivator for learning too. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practicing, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell time in French. It’s a whole-group communicative game, with a multi-skill focus on speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary-building and developing accurate pronunciation. The game really does help to create a lively language learning environment, and is a great alternative to more traditional ‘drilling’ activities. This bundle features 3 separate games sets, each with a particular range of clock times - across the three sets, every single analog clock time is used. There are four cards per 8.5 x 11 page - I always make sure that font and text size is fairly large for beginner French and Primary French learners, as it’s essential that the text - and therefore language - is fully accessible. In the Primary French classroom, we do often have learners who are just beginning to learn how to tell time in their first language, so it’s really important to make learning French manageable in my view. There’s definitely some prep involved - printing, laminating and cutting out - but it’s definitely worth the extra time, as the cards are a lot more learner-friendly when they are sturdier, and they last for years too. There are 5 resources, each for £1, featuring active, differentiated, multi-skill and independent learning activities. Some of the resources overlap learning stages, though I’ve found that students, regardless of ages, often benefit from, and genuinely enjoy, working with activities that are primarily designed for other ability or knowledge stages. This may be either as practice and revision, or as additional or more accessible and manageable challenge. These factors are all key to motivating learners to engage with, and progress in, a new language. There’s certainly prep work involved with some of the resources – I always laminate my language and challenge cards for example, as they’re much more easy to manipulate, and so far more learner-friendly. They do however last in excellent condition for years, so for me, laminating is definitely worth the prep time and extra expense. You don’t have to prepare them all at once – the resources are definitely useful for the longer-term, so you can take your time with the prep, focusing on what you’re working with at any specific stage. Over time, I’ve created activity folders with ready-made resources in, and give my students free-choice time – alone, in pairs or small groups. They decide what they’d like to work on for half an hour or so, and sometimes even a full lesson. We do this pretty regularly, as it’s great for keeping language fresh, and ideal for both consolidation and revision. Additionally, and equally importantly, it helps students develop independent learning skills, moving away from teacher-led learning, and gives them real insight into their own learning progress. German Europe 2 multiple-choice quizzes Ideal for cross-curricular learning in German class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. At the same time, students are developing their German language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their German vocabulary. We play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge. The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through. There are two quiz challenges: Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. German Europe Posters These German Europe flashcards / posters are always really popular with my students and great for the beginning of a new school year to decorate your learning environment with specific learning goals. They’re really useful for creating and instant and comprehensive introduction to Europe in German. There are 144 portrait posters (A4, 8.5 x 11) in German showing European countries, capital cities and flags. They give your classroom a great multicultural look and feel, at the same time promoting German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your - and your students’ - classroom. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography. I’ve included a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, to extend students’ knowledge of Europe a little further, and I’ve also shown some countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. I’ve also included two posters for some countries, such as France, officially known as Französische Republik - you can choose either that, or the more frequently-used Frankreich to display. The posters look great displayed horizontally across a particular learning area - alphabetically works well, though non-alphabetically is perfect for a country quest activity. They’re ideal for the annual Europe Day celebration, and the European Day of Languages, as well as an all year round display. It’s definitely extra prep and expense, but I do always laminate my classroom display posters / flashcards - they hang on the walls more easily, and I recycle them to display at different times of the school year.
