BEGINNER SPANISH COLORS FLASHCARDS POSTERS Los colores en español 8 posters / flashcards These 4***adjectival agreement*** posters, with a focus on the color verde, make an ideal grammar and speaking prompt in the Spanish classroom - for example, I encourage students to look carefully at the differences between el monstruo verde and los monstruos verdes. Giving learners the opportunity to look very closely at language, to identify similarities and differences with their first language, as well as rules and patterns in the target language, is a really key language teaching and learning strategy. I use high-frequency beginner Spanish vocabulary to do this. As students build their vocabulary, with increasing understanding of gender and gender agreement, they are able to apply those rules and patterns to new language. I use questions such as Verdadero o falso? El monstruo verdes? , really emphasizing pronunciation, so that they can hear the difference in agreement. I often write the questions on the whiteboard too, as it’s equally important that they are able to***recognise the differences in the written words*** too, and to link sound with spelling . Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. It doesn’t matter if this particular language doesn’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the flashcards / posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in Spanish, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Spanish. MATH CENTER NUMBERS 0-10 ACTIVITIES -ideal for math centers and independent learning. Word searches a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practicing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. The set features five differentiated word searches, focusing on high-frequency words : Numbers 0-10, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - consolidating not only new words and vocabulary (numbers), but also working on reading, writing, spelling and literacy skills in general. Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. For additional consolidation, they also rewrite each number in the word column. There are also two question and answer key grid templates for learners to create their own searches for each other — this is a really popular activity, and I’ve found that my learners often like to create grids for family at home too. The templates enable learners to apply their language practically and creatively, which is really important at this stage of literacy development. FSL FLE PRIMARY FRENCH IMMERSION FRENCH BREAKFAST POSTERS FLASHCARDS My students love to see French displays in the classroom, and they also work really well for older beginner French learners too. These display posters / flashcards create an instant introduction to 20 breakfast items in French, also giving the learning environment a fabulous French look and feel, promoting French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your learners. They introduce students to breakfast items in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with both the ‘look’ of French words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 20 breakfast items within a sentence, Je prends… Je mange…, Je bois…, using either indefinite or partitive article, singular or plural - I use these as question prompts to get learners talking. It’s a great opportunity to begin to compare French to other languages that students speak. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises. The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Italian-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in Italian. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from an Italian prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Italian-English. Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from an Italian prompt, but the Italian verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding Italian verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It’s really useful for spelling in Italian too. We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision.
