Set 1 French Conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner French to intermediate French students.
Set 2 French Conversation starters also features 100 starters in question format, suitable for intermediate French to advanced French students.
Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, regardless of level, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce accurately language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
In Set 1, the questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the present perfect tense. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it.
In Set 2, the questions feature a range of tenses and moods, such as the present tense, present subjunctive, perfect, imperfect, and conditional perfect. There are several questions focusing on si + imperfect + conditional clauses, and a significant amount of implicit input on a range of grammatical concepts, such as agreement with preceding direct object, use of the subjunctive and so on.
I try to include as broad a range of language as I can in the questions, regardless of student learning level, to facilitate learner progress. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning, which is just as important for more advanced learners.
Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in French. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts.
I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to continue the conversation going.
The starters in Set 1 broadly address the following themes:
personal information
family & routines at home
hobbies & free time
likes & dislikes
local environment
food & drink
school & studies
sport & healthy living
countries & languages
weather & seasons
The starters in Set 2 broadly address the following themes:
music, film & television literature & culture
personal life, information & preferences
leisure & free time
health & well-being
history & society
recent & current events
travel, tourism & holidays
technology & social media
likes & dislikes
local environment
environmental & social issues
education & studies

GERMAN VERBS CARDS & RECALL WORKBOOK #1
DAZ DAF ADVANCED BEGINNER GERMAN VERBS INTERMEDIATE GERMAN VERBS 99 HIGH-FREQUENCY GERMAN VERBS CARDS WITH MATCHING ENGLISH CARDS AND WRITTEN RECALL WORKBOOK a successful alternative to more traditional vocabulary drilling activities.
Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The resource is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully.
German vocabulary practice and revision activities really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can learn independently, developing, embedding, reinforcing and refreshing their German verbs vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way. Together with the accompanying recall and write activities, there is a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this means that the activities are equally about practicing current target language as about engaging with new language.
This set features 99 high-frequency German verbs with matching English verbs cards. There is an alphabetical German-English verb list, indicating where a verb is irregular, separable, modal and conjugated with sein. There are three recall and write challenges which provide students with focused opportunity to embed the verbs into their longer-term memory.
= Challenge 1 requires students to write the equivalent English verb from a German prompt. The German verbs are in alphabetical order.
= Challenge 2 moves on a little from here, with the verbs in random, rather than alphabetical order.
= Challenge 3 requires students to write the German verb from an English prompt. This helps students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to writing and spelling in German.
Encourage students to complete the Meine Notizen / Neue Verben page regularly, reflecting not only on the verbs vocabulary they feel confident about, but also how they think their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in German are developing - and equally importantly, what they can reasonably do to keep improving. Noting any new verbs is a great way of developing a really comprehensive German verbs vocabulary bank, which will enrich their speaking and creative writing.
Laminate the game cards if you can, as they are far more learner-friendly, and the cards will remain in excellent conditional for years.

FSL FLE ADVANCED BEGINNER FRENCH INTERMEDIATE FRENCH SPEAKING PRACTICE CARDS 2 SETS @ $4.00 EACH
The resource consists of non-editable files in a zipped format. It is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use.
These French speaking prompt cards are perfect for developing speaking skills - there are 200 question and answer cards and two reference books focusing on beginning and general conversation with some cultural knowledge. I created them for my advanced beginner to intermediate French learners. They’re also great for multi-skill language learning - they give students structured talk opportunities and will also get them listening, reading and writing. As their confidence and competence develop, my students begin to rely less on the prompts, and are able to produce language really creatively. The cards ideal for independent learning, and perfect for pair and small-group work. There are also a lot of games you can play with the cards, and I’ve described a range of those that work really well for us.
The reference books include all the questions and answers written out in French. Students find these very useful learning support resources and they’re also handy whole-group pronunciation practice and reading-out loud resources. My students use them to guide their own creative use of language, as a kind of writing frame, as they create new questions and answers for each other. We use the Ideas, Notes and Next Steps template to reflect on learning, and to think about what we might reasonably do to progress in our learning - it’s really useful to guide and inform whole-group discussion.
The question and answer card writing templates give students the opportunity to apply their French practically and creatlvely, as they put together both questions and answers for each other, which is integral to successful language learning. This is a really popular with my students, and a great team activity too.

ADVANCED BEGINNER FRENCH SPEAKING ACTIVITIES FRENCH IMMERSION SPEAKING ACTIVITIES FRENCH SPEAKING PRACTICE IDEAL FOR FRENCH TRANSLATION PRACTICE TOO
The resource consists of two non-editable files in a zipped format. It is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use.
These French paired speaking prompt cards an ideal way to promote speaking in French class. Working in small groups or pairs helps students feel confident about talking in French without feeling ‘on the spot’, or worried about not getting their pronunciation and accent right in front of the whole class. The prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and focus on vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that students are generally engaging with from advanced beginner French level.
Language addresses a broad range of grammar points, such as question formats, gender agreement and articles. Some questions and answers include modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions, which makes conversational French more realistic and communicative. Students will not have engaged with all the language used at this stage, and this makes the activity equally about engaging implicitly with new language, as well as practicing and reinforcing the current language focus.
Language varies from basic beginner French such as Quel âge as-tu ? J’ai quinze ans to more involved and complex exchanges such as La mode éthique, c’est trop cher selon toi ?
The set also provides students with an opportunity to develop their translation skills in French from the beginning of their learning, which is very important: they see that ‘word for word’ is rarely, if ever, accurate, and that a correct translation means correctly conveying the meaning of a clause or sentence, rather than every word that appears in it.
The set comprises the following non-editable files in a zipped format:
= 100 cards, 50 questions and 50 suggested responses in French (10 cards per page, 10 pages) Laminate these if possible, as they’re more learner-friendly, and they will remain in excellent condition for years, so they can used many times
= 6-page booklet / answer key containing all the dialogue questions and answers in both French and English
= 6-page translation activity workbook, translating from French into English
notes and recording sheets - if students don’t have class workbooks, they can use the sheets to make notes as they create new questions and responses, and write their completed versions out in full. These sheets are also useful for more formal assessment purposes if required.

SPANISH TELLING TIME I HAVE, WHO HAS? #1
**SPANISH FOR CHILDREN TELLING TIME ELEMENTARY SPANISH TELLING TIME BEGINNER SPANISH TELLING TIME I HAVE WHO HAS TWO GAMES, TWO CHALLENGES : FOCUS ON O’CLOCK, HALF PAST, QUARTER TO AND QUARTER PAST THE HOUR **
Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The product is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use.
A lively whole-group multi-skill language learning game, ideal for Elementary Spanish and beginner Spanish students. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practicing, reinforcing and refreshing how to tell time in Spanish, and for pronunciation practice too.
There are 8 clock faces per page. This size ensures they are sufficiently large for students to be able to read the time clearly, also allowing for an ideal font size to keep language clear and accessible. I always laminate my language learning cards - it’s definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the relevant order. Students will generally have several cards each, depending on the size of your class. We usually set the cards on a table, so that students can see the timeline clearly. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges together, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. The games also work well as pair or small-group games.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: with all the the clock times in numerical order, Tengo… ¿Quién tiene…?
= Challenge 2: with the all the clock times in random order, which really helps recall and embedding new language, as students often learn time phrases in numerical order, ¿Tienes…? Sí (No), tengo……

These word searches are an ideal introduction to conjugating French verbs and perfect for practicing the correct conjugation of two key French verbs: être and avoir. We do lots of comparison with English, and discuss both similarities and differences - this helps students think about patterns in verb conjugation and how languages work in general. They also help young beginners familiarise themselves with personal pronouns in French.
I use word searches a lot in my languages classroom - they’re ideal for encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, and for building vocabulary. I differentiate the grids, so that there is plenty of increasing challenge, that I give students time to work through - this way I can be sure that all my students are motivated to progress.
This set features 5 French-French grids, and 5 English-French grids - this gets students applying their developing knowledge of French a little differently. There’s additional consolidation: students have to complete a verb list in each grid too.
I always give answer keys - for me, that’s an essential part of the learning - they give students an extra opportunity to engage with language, and they also help students develop more independence in their learning. Students also genuinely enjoy checking their own and each others’ work. The format of the word searches is a single grid per 8.5 x 11, landscape format, mirroring the direction of reading from left to right in both French and English.
Try this French fruits word searches freebie - they’re in the same format as this set, so you’ll be able to see whether this kind of activity would work well for your learners:

Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. These sets are aimed at beginner French students of all ages, focusing on***les jours de la semaine*** and les mois et les saisons de l’année. The target vocabulary also includes words such as aujourd’hui, demain, le mois dernier, le mois prochain and la saison prochaine to enable students develop their French vocabulary and to engage with gender agreement.
Additionally, ordinal numbers premier, dernier, deuxième etc provide a really useful language learning opportunity, and increase the challenge in a number of grids. Students have to apply their broader knowledge of French in order to know which word to search for in the grid, for example ***le deuxième jour de la semaine ?***. This makes the activity more comprehensive and engaging than a straightforward months and seasons of the year in French vocabulary exercise.
Each set features 10 differentiated word searches, with an increasing level of challenge. The grids are in landscape format, and have an accompanying answer key so that students can check their own responses. There is an accompanying French-English vocabulary list in both sets, featuring all the vocabulary used in the word searches.

ENGLISH NUMBERS 0-31 TASK CARDS
ESL EFL ENGLISH NUMBERS 0-31 English Numbers 0-31 Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of English and English numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in,* speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in English*. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on Numbers 0-31, but also as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn numbers in English, but also to develop English Language skills in general, to enjoy working with English, and to feel confident about doing so. There’s definitely a UK theme running through many of the questions, featuring questions about fish and chips and the Loch Ness Monster for example. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed!
The questions are all in English, which in itself is a really useful comprehension activity. Depending on your students, reading the questions together first to check for understanding is a good idea. There’s a question card template too - students genuinely enjoy creating questions for each other, and it allows them to apply language practically and creatively. The answer key provides learners with an additional opportunity to engage with language, and also helps them develop more independence in their learning. They genuinely enjoy correcting their own and each others’ work - and it’s a great teacher-time saver too!
The resource comprises the following:
= Set of 36 cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out.
= answer key and answer recording sheet

The set features a range of high-frequency French Christmas vocabulary, useful either as an introduction to, or consolidation of, the target language. Students can also develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their general French language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions are differentiated, and are aimed at advanced beginner French students. They address not only French numbers 0-31, French mathematical language and French Christmas vocabulary, but also a broad range of grammar points, such as definite and indefinite articles, question formats and gender agreement in French.
All the questions are in French, with the Christmas images providing students with visual learning support. The Christmas vocabulary and images help to develop students’ awareness of a range of Christmas traditions and figures in French-speaking countries, such as galette des Rois and Père Fouettard, which I’ve translated as Father Fouettard, rather than ‘Whipping Father’, and are also really useful for stimulating discussion about French Christmas practices and customs. This is a great alternative to more standard presentations and worksheets. Students also enjoy talking about other Christmas traditions they know or follow.
The resource comprises the following non-editable files:
= 48 differentiated question cards - laminate if possible, as they will remain in excellent condition for years
= answer key - this can also be laminated, and shared among groups of students for class work
= answer recording sheet - simply print as many as your particular groups need. My students generally use their class workbooks for working out and noting responses, though recording sheets are definitely useful for more formal assessment purposes.

Task cards are an ideal language learning activity, providing multi-skill language learning opportunities. These sets are ideal for a range of French language grades.
This kind of activity really does help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their French language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.
The differentiated questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in French in general, and on the focus language, for example, conjugating French RE verbs in the present tense in particular.
I use task not only when we’re focusing on the focus language and grammar, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity. The goal is not simply to learn how French works, and how patterns can be identified and applied, it’s also about enjoying working with French, and to feel confident about doing so.
The questions are differentiated, and range in complexity and challenge, with some calling specifically upon prior and new knowledge too, helping students make links and build bridges in their learning. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with - these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects, personal pronouns and question formats in French.
The question card template available in some sets enables students to apply their knowledge practically and creatively, which is an essential element to successful language learning.
To get the most from the questions, I frequently look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices. Identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses.
All sets have full answer keys and recording sheets.
