Remembrance Day - Reading Activity
Using ‘In Flanders Field’, this worksheet includes a skim and scan activity to encourage rapid word location; questions on vocabulary and punctuation; poetry analysis. Could be used as a guided reading activity or as part of a lesson on Remembrance Day.
Ancient Greek Myths Skim and Scan
Included here are 5 different Myths with Skim and Scan challenges to aid quick reading recall. There are a variety of different length texts and difficulties. Students often enjoy being challenged against a timer to make it even more fun!
Non Fiction Skim & Scan
Nine Skim and Scan activities based on a range of historical sources such as Tutankhamen’s Tomb, Zeus, Titanic and the Blitz.
Students are required to read a short extract and then locate a range of words within a time limit - just like a wordsearch! These have proven very popular with my class and helps with speedy retrieval skills in preparation for the SATs.
Guy Fawkes Reading Activity
A fictional last confession from Guy Fawkes, the night before his execution. (This could be used as a model). Students have a skim and scan activity, encouraging a quick response to locating words within the text. This is followed by a series of vocabulary and language questions, similar to SATs style reading questions.
Monarchy: Comprehension
A KS2 Reading Comprehension based on Queen Victoria’s diary entry for the day of her Coronation. Questions are SAT style and an answer guide is provided.
Titanic Skim and Scan
Reading activities for UKS2 that aids quick recall and other helpful reading skills. Good revision for KS2 SATS. Children enjoy working against a timer (I recommend between 3-5 minutes) and then trying to beat their score. A quick but valuable activity.
Ancient Greeks: Guided Reading Activities

Changing Monarchy: Compare and Contrast
Factfile providing information on six kings and queens of England including: Richard III, Henry VIII, Charles II, George III, Victoria, Elizabeth II. Features information about different aspects of their reign.

Ancient Greece: Speaking & Listening
This resource features a range of Speaking and Listening tasks using Bloom’s Taxonomy. Subjects include mythology, philosophy, architecture, Sparta, & the Gods. Used as starters for English or History lessons or as a whole class Sp&L lesson.
Monarchy: Speaking & Listening
PowerPoint presentation with 20 slides featuring speaking and listening activities for KS2 children studying the British Monarchy. A range of Kings and Queens of England are included, with references to Magna Carta, The War of the Roses, the abdication of 1936, and WW2. A range of sources are also included to encourage children to think about their importance. Reference is made here to Shakespeare, Hamilton, and 18th century propaganda.

Ancient Greece Reading Comprehensions
This resource includes 3 different reading comprehensions: a simple retrieval task based on the Gods and Goddesses of Mount Olympus, a comprehension based on the myth of Persephone, and another on the philosopher, Socrates.
