This lesson introduces pupils to shapes and patterns. There are a series of interactive activities, all of which test pupils' ability to place shapes in a particular order. They will also create multi-coloured objects, one side at a time. The lesson can be simulated in the classroom using plastic building blocks.

This unit is made up of a number of mini activities. After finding the 12 pentominoes pupils use the shapes in the following activities: Find the symmetry and rotational symmetry of the shapes. Investigate which pentominoes will tessellate without being rotated, then which will tessellate when rotated. Fit the shapes into varying sizes of rectangles. The unit contains pentomino shapes to download and print out.

A resource which presents how to sort, search, graph and create a database. This resource is divided into 5 parts: Sorting Searching one field Searching two field Graphing Creating a database All the units follow the same pattern e.g., searching: Teacher notes Starter activity - an animation which shows what searching means. Session 1 - interactive activities which give the pupils an opportunity to see if they have understood what was presented in the Starter Activity. Session 2 - An introduction to a computer simulation. The animation presents how to search with data handling software.

This transition project allows pupils to handle data in a real life context. The work is split over four year groups from Years 5 to 8, with opportunity for groups to revisit the previous year’s results. Year 5 collects discrete data, finds the mode and range and displays the results on an interactive bar graph. Year 6 collects discrete data, finds the mode, median, mean and range and displays their results on an interactive pictogram. Year 7 collects discrete data and displays their data on an interactive scatter diagram.

This KS1 Maths lesson helps pupils to understand the concept of ordinal numbers. A series of activities reinforces the idea of first, second, third and so on. In the main activity, pupils have the choice of two races and place the competitors in a suitable order. Further activities teach higher ordinal numbers (from 11th to 20th). The lesson fulfils these National Curriculum requirements (KS1, Ma2, Number): * approach problems involving number, and data presented in a variety of forms * count reliably up to 20 objects at first

These activities introduce pupils to a fully open ended maths investigation based on the famous Towers of Hanoi problem, focussing on number patterns. There are detailed teacher notes aimed at the non-maths specialist for support in the teaching of this topic. The unit is aimed at upper KS2 – KS3. It can be used as a transition project or as assessment of AT1. Other topics covered: Number
