New York – Travel Destinations. This GCE Travel and Tourism case study aims to help students, teachers and parents with the requirements of AQA’s Unit 3 ‘Travel Destinations’. It will also be useful for those studying with the Edexcel and OCR exam boards. The case study includes assessor commentaries, which will give an indication of the unit requirements and the depth of portfolio work required. Areas covered include: Location, climate and landscape; attractions; travel method; future popularity and suitability for different customer types.

Excel data files of hourly rainfall and river height for three contrasting drainage basins in S Wales are used to construct and analyse flood hydrographs as both whiteboard and independent student activities. OS maps, sketch maps, photographs, videos and other Geographical Information Systems provide the background to an ‘Investigation into factors causing differing river flood levels’.

This resource pack teaches pupils how to create a scatter diagram. It is split into sections taking pupils through the process step by step allowing them to interact with the resource before showing them the answers. Pupils can plot the data and draw the line of best fit then use the graph to estimate particular values. Section 2 allows the pupils to build on this work by drawing and comparing graphs to answer questions.

A resource based on identity and belonging and how clothes can be used to establish that identity. These activities are developed primarily as a speaking and listening resource but there are many opportunities for reading and writing also. All of the activities are based on the models outlined in the new Welsh Assembly Document ‘Developing Thinking’ with lots of opportunity for group work and fit with the new skills framework.

Apostrophes are used for shortened forms of words or to mark possession. Of the two, the use of apostrophes for contraction is most readily understood. As long as pupils securely grasp the idea that the apostrophe takes the place of a missing letter or letters, they are quick to position it correctly. They should be made aware that contracted forms are more appropriate for speech than for writing.
