A Christmas Carol - Caroline’s Family (includes a 14-slide editable PowerPoint and 2 worksheets) This lesson explores Dickens’ presentation of Caroline and her husband’s response to Scrooge’s death in Stave Four of A Christmas Carol. It begins with a differentiated information retrieval task in which learners use their existing knowledge and logic skills in order to select the odd image out on three rows of a table. Learners will then read from, ‘The Phantom spread its dark robe before him for a moment’ down to ‘“…will be for ever present to me.”’ After reading the passage, learners will undertake a worksheet that asks them to match 10 questions about the passage to the correct answers. A Christmas Carol - Scrooge Makes Amends (Stave 5) (17-slide editable PowerPoint with 4 worksheets) This differentiated GCSE lesson enables learners to explore Dickens’ presentation of Scrooge in Stave Five. It assumes that learners have previously read the opening passage, from the beginning of Stave Five down to Scrooge’s delight in the ‘glorious’ bells and ‘heavenly sky’ of Christmas morning. The lesson begins with a differentiated Quick-Fire Quiz in which learners answer as many questions as they can on Staves One-Four in eight minutes. Learners will then read from ‘‘‘What’s today?’’ cried Scrooge’, down to the end of Stave Five. After reading the passage, learners will then undertake a double-sided worksheet in which they respond to questions that encourage them to consider Dickens’ presentation of Scrooge in this stave. Please note that it focuses on the following passage: From: ‘Such a bustle ensued…’ Down to: ‘…to hint at such a thing.’ The lesson begins with a differentiated ‘Do Now’ starter activity in which learners examine a range of quotations from Staves 1-3 with a view to deciding which is the odd one out. Suggested answers are included. This is followed by a revision task in which learners decide which four out of a possible eight statements about the Cratchits are true. Following on from this, learners will read the passage indicated above. Learners will then analyse Dickens’ presentation of the Cratchits by responding to prompts on a passage-based worksheet. This is the second of three GCSE lessons on the Ghost of Christmas Present from Stave 3 of A Christmas Carol. It focuses on the following passage: From: ‘”Come in!” exclaimed the Ghost…’ down to: ‘“A tremendous family to provide for,” replied Scrooge’. The lesson begins with a starter activity which asks learners to read and reflect on a short passage explaining the origins of the term Plenty’s horn. Following on from this, learners will read the above passage, focusing on: How Dickens presents Scrooge as he enters the room Why the Ghost has ‘more than eighteen hundred brothers’ The significance of Scrooge’s response to the Ghost at the end of the passage. Learners will then examine two images. One of these is the John Leech illustration of the Ghost of Christmas Present from 1843. The other is a drawing of Old Christmas from December 1842. Learners will consider the similarities and differences between the two images and suggest inferences that can be made about the Ghost based on the image of Old Christmas. This GCSE resource enables students to use the Venn diagram method to compare and contrast the two characters in Stave One of A Christmas Carol. Contents include: A differentiated starter activity, in which pupils work through a series of tasks and questions in pairs to revise what they have discovered about Scrooge so far. After this, learners will read from ‘Once upon a time…’ in Stave One down to ‘…for he returned them cordially’, thinking about what they learn about Fred, Scrooge’s attitude towards his nephew and why Dickens chooses not to reveal Fred’s first name at this stage in the novella. The main activity is for learners to use a Venn diagram and a bank of quotations to compare and contrast Fred and Scrooge. At higher levels, learners will also group the quotations into specific categories and write a comparative paragraph using a pair or set of related quotes as a basis. To conclude, learners will read a definition of a foil character and suggest three ways in which Fred could be considered a foil character for Scrooge. ‘A Christmas Carol - the Rich and the Poor’ explores Dickens’ presentation of the gap between the rich and the poor in Stave One of A Christmas Carol. The resource is made up of a 13-slide PowerPoint presentation and 2 worksheets. Its contents include: A differentiated ‘Do Now’ starter activity in which pupils reflect on the importance of 6 quotations from Scrooge’s dialogue with the charity collectors. After this, students will read from ‘Meanwhile, the fog and darkness thickened so…’ down to ‘…to play at blindman’s buff’. As they read, learners will consider the differences between the lives of the rich and the poor in the passage and how Dickens presents these differences. At the highest level, learners will reflect on Dickens’ use of light and dark imagery in the extract. The next activity is for learners to contemplate the significance of the excerpt from ‘God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen’ and how Dickens adapts it in Stave One. This two-lesson GCSE resource explores how Dickens presents Marley’s Ghost in Stave One of A Christmas Carol. The first lesson focuses on the arrival of the ghost and covers the passage from ‘Scrooge took his melancholy dinner in his usual melancholy tavern…’ down to ‘…I won’t believe it’. It enables learners to examine how Dickens hints at the impending arrival of Marley’s Ghost, from the appearance of Marley’s face in the door knocker to the sound of clanking chains in the cellar. Lesson two focuses on how Dickens portrays Marley’s Ghost as being in Purgatory. A Christmas Carol - The Penitent Spirits (15-slide PowerPoint-based GCSE lesson with differentiated worksheets) At the end of Stave One, Scrooge sees into the purgatorial realm that he is currently doomed to enter. This resource enables students to examine how Dickens presents the penitent spirits that Scrooge observes. It includes: A differentiated starter activity quiz to help revise the main ideas in Stave One Students will then study from, ‘It held its chain up at arm’s length…’ down to the end of chapter, thinking about how Dickens describes the scene outside of Scrooge’s window and its implications for Scrooge himself. After this, pupils will examine an illustration of the scene in question, evaluating the artist’s depiction of the passage they have just read.
