Project focussing on hand sewing skills using recycled materials. Designed for one double lesson per week (100 mins), lasts nine weeks.
Students design and make for one of three customers:
Baby Girl, Blind Girl or a Four-year-old Boy.
A passive amplifier product design project designed for Y8. Students are given three identical pieces of softwood that they sandwich together, the centre piece is cut specifically for their mobile phone to slot into, the front and centre are then bored using a Forstner bit for the sound to amplify, then slots cut to join the bores to the mobile phone speakers.
Pupils conduct primary research on a selection of pre-made amplifiers, come up with initial ideas, use a Pugh Matrix to select an idea, develop that idea and then manufacture.
Cushion that takes inspiration from a country of choice.
Students produce four squares using applique, tie-dye, batik and embroidery to create a commercial cushion that could be sold in a shop to promote that country. Squares are sewn together to create large cushion.
Inspired by Dave Bausor and contains some of his images.
This project enables pupils to explore a wide range of technical concepts, including:
Metals
Paper and Board
Environmental issues
Reducing waste
Calculating percentage waste
Soldering
Basic electronics
Use of jigs and templates
Evaluation
Purchased resources:
AAL1049 0.7mm Aluminium Sheet
Super Bright 5v 12 LED Kit
This unit has been designed for Year 9 pupils to build confidence in sketching. Pupils learn about basic skills and build upon these each lesson.
Pupils will use the DTDOT/DTMicroDOT when sketching in isometric.
Applied activities include the design of earbud headphones, a hairdryer and a fragrance bottle.
At the end of the unit pupils complete a product analysis on a three-pin plug.
A two-week design only project to study smart and modern materials with a focus on sketching, rendering and annotation.
This resource contains:
2x PowerPoints of whole lesson.
2x Resource packs
1x Writing Frame for Lesson 1
Lesson 1: (Tip, keep the design a secret until the end i.e. they don't know why they are learning about smart and modern materials)
Pupils rotate around tables in a carousel in order to learn about smart and modern materials. They begin to think about a sports glove design based around a very simple specification that they develop.
Lesson 2:
Pupils develop their initial design whilst learning about annotation and rendering. They focus deeply on material selection and their justifications for their choices.
A 5/6 week project that investigates different aspects of rocket design, each lesson aims to address a different aspect including fin design, aerodynamics and mass.
A water rocket launcher is used in the school playground.

Powerpoints and videos for every lesson - ideal for non-specialists
This SoW has been tweaked a lot over the last few years. It offers a great introduction to our subject in Year 7 with a focus on technical skills rather than creativity.

A serious amount of work went into these! Credit to V.Ryan for a small amount of the content.
Split into knowledge for Paper 1 and for Paper 2.
Aimed at KS4+, this guide will allow pupils to explore the basic tools of OnShape, including creating parts and assemblies with a range of application tasks at the end.
Pupils explore metals and casting in creating an art-deco inspired jewellery piece. Pupils design in a booklet and then use 2D Design to design the mould to be laser cut from 2mm MDF.
Pupils then design and manufacture a user-centred organiser. All pupils receive a piece of 18mm plywood which then can use as a base, then design around that. Very open ended and pupils enjoy the freedom in which this project allows.
Scheme of work, examples, booklets and powerpoints included.
