An 8 page hand-out deigned to guide pupils through the process of writing a commentary for their original writing. This includes: a two page guide on how to structure a commentary (including key questions to promote individual analysis); an assessment task where examples of varying grades have been given and pupils have to allocate grades using the marking criteria and self assessment grid to ensure all of the basic frameworks of language have been covered. KS3/KS4 Media Lesson. Moving Image analysis. Comparing two adverts for the Skoda Fabia. Pupils are encouraged to develop an awareness of target audience and connotation using group tasks, with jigsaw activities.

A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson. Objective (A03): Grade 3: Make obvious point of comparison. Make simple comments on writers’ ideas and view points. Level 4: As above and makes some specific references to theme, language and structure. Level 5: Discusses a range of comparisons in some detail. Explains the writers’ ideas and viewpoints with quotations to support. Pupils complete a series of activities to build a framework to asses both poems. They then complete an analysis framework sheet and a series of P.E.E paragraphs (with a support sheet for LA pupils).

Suitable for high-ability KS2 and KS3 classes. The lesson highlights how pupils can vary their sentence openings to engage their readers. Pupils assess the effect of a series of sentence openers, they then break down the differences between the sentence openings through a series of activities, before creating their own story using a stimuli, which has built up from previous activities.
