Welcome to RA Resources. This lesson examines Queen Mary I’s decision to marry King Philip II of Spain. Students will first compare modern reasons for marriage before contrasting that with the events of Mary’s Reign. They will then evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the marriage (from the point of view of Mary I) before using these ideas to write a letter to her expressing and explaining their views about the marriage. The lesson pack includes: 1 x Fact Sheet about the events leading upto and including the marriage 1 x Letter structure sheet for students to write their letter to Mary I 1 x Main Power Point presentation which includes a variety of starter tasks, discussion points, an overview of the main task as well as a number of challenge questions to stretch the most able.

UPDATED RESOURCE 2023 This resource has been specifically designed to support students in their answers to the three main source based questions given in the Edexcel GCSE History exam paper. The one page print out can be used as a book insert while studying a unit, a table top guide as well as a useful revision resource to prepare for exams. Particular attention is given to the ‘How useful’ question which appears in two exam papers. The three questions covered in the guide are: Inference - used in Paper 3 Follow Up - used in Paper 1 Source Usefulness - used in both Paper 1 & 3 This resource would also be ideal for the use with students in KS3 as a way to make them familiar with core GCSE History skills.

In this lesson, students will be able to use factual information as well as the views from historians and historical sources to help them form their own opinion to the question – is the British Empire something we should be proud or ashamed of? As always, the lesson is fully resourced and contains a number of printable resources, engaging activities and information. The lesson presumes that students already have a knowledge of what the British empire was although this is quickly recapped at the start of the lesson.
