This outstanding lesson has been been designed to help students understand why Europeans enslaved black people. It starts by looking at the reasons for the early voyages of discovery, the rediscovery of America and the rich new opportunities that the exploitation of the raw materials and new agricultural products offered the technologically superior Europeans. It then looks at the impact of the Europeans on the Native American population, their failure to enslave them and the resulting labour shortage that they tried at first to fill with convicts and indentured servants and finally with black slaves from Africa. This fun and engaging lesson is suitable for the full ability range. It is beautifully illustrated throughout and will help to inspire a fair degree of awe and wonder in your students as it will answer a lot of questions about the origins of not only slavery but also the naming of the ‘West Indies’, ‘America’ and the source of a lot of everyday items that they take for granted. Reformation: Why was there religious conflict in the 16th Century?

This great lesson has been field tested many times over the past 20 years. This version is an upgrade of the original lesson that I posted many years ago on school history. It looks at the causes of the Protestant Reformation and the ideas of Martin Luther. It is designed to suit the full range of abilities that you would find in a main stream secondary school. The PowerPoint includes 5 activities. The first activity is a snowballing starter using all the key words in the lesson. The second activity gets students to annotate / label a medieval painting of purgatory. This will hopefully lead to a class discussion on ideas about Heaven and Hell. The third activity is to update and correct their labelling with purple pen. There then follows a series of slides and links to video clips explaining medieval ideas on relics, indulgences (Pardons) and Martin Luther’s role in challenging them. This is all done simply at a level that main stream students can understand. The fourth activity, gets students to design their own Wittenberg Poster using Martin Luther’s ideas. This can be completed and aged for homework using tea bags or coffee and makes an excellent classroom display. 1000s of my students have completed this task and loved it! The final activity, which might take a second lesson, gets students to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between a Catholic and a Protestant Church. This highly adaptable revision guide with a past paper question and assessment for learning pupil mark scheme is must have for anyone studying the causes of the Second World War. The first page includes all the key facts students need to know about German rearmament and why Britain and France failed to stop Germany. The second page includes two activities, a summary table why Germany was able to rearm 1933 - 1939 and a discussion / extended writing activity which aims to assess how successful was Germany’s attempts to rearm in comparison to the rest of the world by 1939. The third page includes an optional Oxford and Cambridge Exam Board source based question on why the disarmament conference failed, whilst page four contains the pupil mark scheme and writing frame for the question. This great resource is designed to help students studying the impact that the mountain men and early pioneers had the American West. It can be used as a revision activity, preparation for an essay on this topic or as a starter or plenary. It can be used alongside any of the main stream text books on the American West or even my PowerPoint on this topic which can be downloaded via The History Academy TES shop. This type of activity is ideal for lower and middle ability students, but I have also included some stretch and challenge in the second task. The card sort includes two heading cards labelled negative and positive consequences as well as 16 cards that can sorted underneath them. This sort of task should take a middle ability group 10 to 15 minutes and a lower ability group 20 minutes. This great little resource is designed to help students assess how successful were the polices of the Weimar Republic from 1923 - 1929. The resource includes two tasks. The first task is a simple card sort where students have to sort 16 cards under two headings, success and failure. The second task, then gets the students to decide how far each factor or card was a success or failure by placing them onto a living graph or continuum. The first task is designed for lower and middle ability students, whilst the second is designed to provide stretch and challenge for middle to upper ability students. I would recommend printing the living graph / continuum on page 2 onto an A3 sheet, but you could get your students to draw one across two pages in their exercise books, The resource is provided in word so it can be easily adapted for your students. This great resource is designed to be used a stand alone lesson or to be printed off in color, laminated and displayed in your classroom. It contains a number of color slides which explain to students how to analyse a historical source successful by looking at their origin, nature, purpose, access to information etc… Underpinning this is the use of the acronyms PEEL and CCCJ as potential scaffolds or writing frames to help students structure their answers: P = Point E = Example E = Explain L = Link C = Comment C = Content C= Context (Source & Knowledge) J = Judgement In most of the sliders are examples of sentence starters to help your students get started. This outstanding resource is designed to help students evaluate how successful the New Deal was at putting the USA back to work through the alphabet agencies by looking at two contrasting case studies the Civilian Works Administration and the Public Works Administration. This excellent little card sort exercise is designed to help students test their understanding of the different types of crime that people suffered in the American West. It can also be used as a starter or plenary and is suitable for the full range of ability. When you purchase this resources you will receive a single sheet A4 resource with eight heading cards and statements which need to be cut out and matched together. This resource is provided in Microsoft Word so it can be easily customized for your students if necessary. I usually keep a class set of these in envelops for my students to sort, but the instructions on the sheet allow for students to cut them out and stick then into their exercise books. This outstanding resource is designed to provide stretch and challenge for students studying hos the international situation led to the ‘Red Sacre’ in the 1950s USA. The pedagogy underpinning this strategy is that when we rank items, either statements, objects or images, we are required to make explicit the over- arching relationships by which we organize our knowledge and connect our learning. It can also be used as a starter, plenary or as a revision activity on how the international situation helped to cause the ‘Red Scare’ in the USA during the 1950s. The resource includes nine diamond shaped cards which include a range of factors to explain how the international situation helped to increase the fear and mistrust of the USSR. Once students have cut the cards out they are set three tasks including: Remove any reasons that you don’t think are important. Record and explain why you have removed them. Arrange the remaining diamonds to show any links that you can find between the different reasons. Record and explain your reasons. Make a smaller diamond shape using what you think are the four most important international events or factors that helped to cause the Red Scare in the 1950s? This outstanding resource has been designed by experienced teachers to help provide stretch and challenge for students studying why the League of Nations failed to stop the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. It can be used as a starter, plenary, revision or assessment activity. If you are looking for something a little easier for middle and lower ability students, then check out my card sort matching exercise on this topic. The resource includes nine diamond shaped cards which include a range of factors to explain why the League of Nations failed to stop the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. The document is provided in Microsoft Word so you can edit the resource if you wish to customise it further by changing any of the key factors that I have included. Once students have cut out the cards out they are set three tasks including: 1. Remove any reasons that you don’t think are important. Record and explain why you have removed them. 2. Arrange the remaining diamonds to show any links that you can find between the different reasons. Record and explain your reasons. 3. Make a smaller diamond shape using the four most important reasons to explain why the League of Nations failed to stop the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. The Word document includes aims, instructions and eight picture cards and six heading cards. Once students have cut out the cards and correctly matched the picture cards to both their correct heading and before and after labels, they can extend their understanding further by sorting them into their order of importance before sticking them into their books. This outstanding lesson has been designed to help students studying the historical controversy surrounding the death of Emily Davison. It can be used with the full spectrum of ability, but the text level of the task would suit mainly lower middle and upper ability students. I have also produced an alternative information card sort for lower ability students on this topic or if you wish you can buy both resources together for the bargain price of £5. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download Microsoft Word document as well as an accompanying PowerPoint. The Word document includes aims, instructions, two heading cards labelled 'accident' and 'suicide', along with 11 sources labelled A to I, that need to be sorted. The PowerPoint presentation is designed to help facilitate the lesson and includes aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, appropriate video clip links, assessment questions, pupil mark schemes and feedback sheets. The lesson kicks off with a snowballing starter activity, followed by a brief one side introduction to Emily Davison and her background. The next two slides discuss the historical controversy and include quotes from historians supporting each interpretation. This is then followed up by completing the source investigation / card sort. Once this is complete, students can then feedback and then do a follow up assessment on the topic. This optional, but I've included additional slides with a pupil mark scheme that can be easily adapted for to your own assessment scheme if necessary.
