Jekyll and Hyde: Essay Planning - Study Guide

Before beginning to write essays, essay planning can act as a useful exercise. Essay planning refers to the planning of essays before you actually write them. This is mainly done so that you can hone your ideas and think more deeply about the kinds of questions you will be asked in your exams. In any exam, it’s important to make a quick (5-7 minute) plan before you write the piece, so you can organise your ideas and structure your paragraph correctly. Outside of timed conditions, when you’re practising essays, you want to practise writing extended plans where you explore your thoughts on the question in detail. Have a resource on us! Jekyll and Hyde: Narrative Voice - Study Guide

(0)
The narrative voice in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is unusual in several ways. Firstly, it’s inconsistent: the first few chapters are written more conventionally, using third person limited perspective to follow Utterson’s journey through the story as he is consumed by the desire to uncover the mystery surrounding Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’s relationship. Yet, by Chapter 8 Utterson disappears from the novel altogether. Finally, later chapters are narrated as accounts by various people - including a letter from D Lanyon, and a final ‘Statement of the Case’ from Dr Jekyll himself, where he confesses his sins and reveals the deeper mysteries of the tale.
