With a distinct lack of exemplar papers available for the new Edexcel (9-1) GCSE English Language Exams I have constructed some papers and included mark schemes and indicative content as guidance. An extensive powerpoint that works through the entire play including contextual information, activities and assessment tasks that are aligned with the GCSE (9-1) specifications. This is a detailed unit of work that supports KS3 students through the study of a play text and has proved to be an excellent training ground for GCSE studies.

This powerpoint covers the latter chapters of Book 1 of this new GCSE text. The powerpoint contains a number of engaging activities to ensure full comprehension of the text as you read and activities to begin to construct revision pages on the themes contained in this text. It also includes a 9-1 exam style 'exploding question' in which extract skills are taught in a supported way before setting up a full essay question.

This lesson takes you through a theory based lesson using music to learn quotations from texts. This lesson has proved to be a highly enjoyable, alternative and effective approach to last minute quotation learning, even for students who struggle to retain information. This is the first of several lessons on this new option on GCSE syllabuses. These lessons are differentiated and supported whilst also offering challenge and options to create revision resources in preparation for the final examinations. These lesson would work as well for KS3 groups who need a strengthened syllabus in preparation for the more robust (9-1) specifications as for KS4 students preparing for exams. This lesson starts with an engaging visual activity that engages students with the concept of tone in art before then asking them to apply this thinking to some literary extracts. The lesson continues to draw on the DIRT strategy to improve and assess work and establish success criteria for using the right tone when writing an article. This is an excellent revision lesson to refine techniques for writing Transactional Writing pieces for the GCSE exams.

This resource is a collection of 6 Literary Non Fiction articles traversing subjects such as Travel, Poverty, London, Class, Men and Women and Schooling. Hopefully this will save others a little time when teaching this part of the English Language courses that use this aspect of our literary heritage.

With few revision papers available for use this is another 19th Century Fiction Paper based on the novel 'Lost Hearts' by M R James. the resource includes a mark scheme and indicative content. This extract is a ghostly tale and a good one to use for analysis of tension/setting rather than characterisation. This is a very accessible paper and would be useful practise for both KS3 students doing a 'Supernatural' Unit of work or for KS4 lower ability to build confidence.

This lesson includes a range of tasks to engage students, including information on context and interpretations of the poem. The lesson includes extension activities, grading criteria and DIRT tasks. This is a really effective lesson to use when studying poetry at KS3 level to gently introduce students to the strengthened demands of the GCSE (9-1) syllabus.

This resource is designed to take GCSE students through a detailed analysis of William Wordsworth’s poem in line with the new GCSE (9-1) specifications. It covers context, form, language and structure. This lesson incorporates a number of differentiated activities, in particular stretch and challenge, for the very top end using the Venus and Adonis Myth to secure a grade 8/9.

This resource examples how audiences assume a 'Collective Identity' through a range of images to prompt discussion before then exploring the Critical Debate 'Whatever I say I am' . The lesson concludes with an essay question, peer assessment and DIRT style homework task to build on learning and independent research for this Case Study. This is an excellent lesson for students who need that extra leg up on this more challenging Case Study.

This lesson is an excellent introduction the feminist background and theory, it uses an extract from Charlotte Gilman Perkins 'The Yellow Wallpaper' and leads students through a feminist reading of the text. This lesson includes references and explanations of 'Herstory' and 'L'ecriture Feminine' and proved highly progressive with my year 12 students.
