This resource takes students through a step by step study of this fascinating novel. Activities are differentiated, essay are guided with supportive notes and preparatory activities, close reading is modeled and exemplars offered to ensure that students are inspired by a high standard of work. This 12 slide powerpoint takes students on a journey of realisation in which they discuss the definitions of fiction and fable, consider the context against which this novel was written, read some fables and decide what lesson is to be learnt and then apply this understanding to this text through a creative activity. This powerpoint is designed to ensure that context is never again merely ‘bolted on’ in an exam response. This lesson works well at any stage in the teaching of this novel as it is designed as much to teach, as it is to ‘fill gaps’ in terms of revision. This resource has been an absolute labour of love. Having created chapter resources on this text, I set myself a challenge to create a revision or learning resource that covered aspects on context, quotations, links within the text, linguistic devices and narration whilst students are actively engaged. The tasks in this resource start with some straightforward questions and build towards quotation reconstruction before finishing on an analytical question. To ensure you have a clear winner in your groups I have included a Bonus Question for use in a tie break situation.
