Marguerite Annie Johnson Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, ,dancer, poet and civil rights activist. She is best known for her first memoir I know Why the Caged Bird Sings this was the first nonfiction best seller by an African-American woman. She published 7 autobiographies, 3 books of essays, several books of poetry and is credited with a list of plays, movies and tv. shows spanning 50 years. Her books centre on themes including racism, identity, family and travel. In 1993 she recited her poem ‘On the Pulse of the morning’ at President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. They are set out in the order they are mentioned in the article. Walter Tull - served in WW1 in the Middlesex Regiment killed in action on 25th March 1918 played football Robbie Clarke- William Robinson Clarke- WW1 airman. First black pilot to fly for Britain. Died aged 88 George Arthur Roberts- a Trinidadian soldier WW1- known as the coconut bomber , fire-fighter during Blitz (WW11) Learie Nicholas Constantine, Baron Constantine (1969) -first black peer- cricketer, lawyer & politician - during WW11 responsible for West Indians employed in GB factories Princess Adenrele Ademole - a Nigerian princess trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital during WW11. Later, when she heard RAF were taking citizens of West Indian descent she applied again and became one of the first black women to join the RAF- Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. She trained in instrument repair - a trade newly opened to women. In the 1960s went to evening classes,studied at London University and became a teacher. John Henry Clavell Smythe, joined RAF and trained as a navigator- did 26 bombing missions, 27 th shot down - spent 2 years in German prison. In 1948 became senior officer aboard the Empire Windrush. Saint Aidan was an Irish monk from Saint Columbo’s monastery on the Isle of Iona. In 635 Aidan was made bishop and set off for Northumbria. He decided to make his new headquarters on Lindisfarne or Holy Island, a rocky island off the east coast of Northumberland. There he built a wooden church and monastery huts for his companions and himself and started a school for boys. The monks lived a life of prayer, study and austerity (no luxuries). From here they went on their missions. The monastery was in sight of Bamborough, the castle/capital of King Oswald. Initially he had a problem with the English language so the king interpreted for him. They soon became great friends. Saint Aidan was a simple and gentle man but quick to recognise goodness. He walked everywhere spreading the gospel and founded churches for his small Christian communities. (The king’s son Oswin , when he became king, offered him a horse but he gave it away) In his years of evangelism he was responsible for the the construction of churches, monasteries and schools throughout Northumbria. His friend King Oswald was killed after a battle with Penda, king of Mercia. Penda unable to take Bamborough created a fire which he hoped, wind assisted, would destroy the city. Saint Aidan prayed and the wind turned dramatically - Penda’s army retreated. A while later Oswy invaded Northumbria. Oswin, knowing he could not win, dismissed his army. One of his own earls betrayed him. Saint Aidan died of shock when he heard the news - August 31st 651. Saint Aidan is known as the Apostle of Northumbria. Joseph Lightfoot, Bishop of Durhamwent several steps further Augustine was the Apostle of Kent, but Aidan was the Apostle of the English*. I found this wonderful page depicting Autumn by Mari Friend in a book called *Winter Survival. The picture encouraged me to sort out my Vocabularies on Poetry Aids on Autumn. There is a new Autumn sports vocabulary. I have also created an easier Poetry Aid .

Catherine Wilkinson (1786-1860) was an Irish migrant who became known as the *Saint of the Slaves *. In 1832 during a cholera epidemic she had the only boiler in her neighbourhood so she invited those with infected clothes or linen to use her boiler at the cost of a 1 penny a week. She saved many lives as a result. This became the first public washhouse in Liverpool. She showed them how to use a chloride of lime to get them clean. Boiling killed the cholers bacteria. Kitty pushed for the establishment of public baths where the poor could bathe, 10 years later, with the support of the District Provident Society and William Rathbone, plus public funds, the first combined washhouse and public baths in the U.K. was opened on Upper Fredrick Street in Liverpool . In 1846 she was appointed superintendent of the public baths . She died in 1846 aged 73 having already been recognised for her Indefatigable and self denying during her lifetime by the mayor of Liverpool that year. KItty was born Catherine Seaward in County Londonderry, Ireland. Aged 9 she was coming with her family to Mersey. The ship ran aground and her father and her younger sister drowned. Aged 12 she went to work at a cotton mill in Caton, Lancashire as an indentured apprentice. Aged 20 she left the mill and returned to live with her mother in Liverpool. They both worked in domestic service. While living with her mother she married Emanuel Demontee and had two children. Demontee drowned and they returned to domestic services. She was gifted with a mangle and set herself up as a laundress. In 1823 married Tom Wilkinson, a warehouse porter. They continued to rent a house in Denison Street. In 2012 marble statue unveiled in St. George’s Hall. Black Friday is the last Friday in November. This when firms sell some of their products at a really crazy price. The children might like to pretend that they can buy ALL l their Christmas presents they have dreamed of having. OR they might like to believe their pocket money will be sufficient to buy ALL the presents they want to buy to give to their parents. I have created a list of phrases and a vocabulary to create their dream.

Kenneth was an American preacher. He is known for pioneering the Word of Faith movement. His most frequently quoted verse was For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be removed, and be though cast into sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he hath saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever ye desire, when you pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mark ch 11 v 23/4 Kenneth was born with a deformed heart and what was believed to be an incurable blood disease. Aged 15 he became paralyzed and bedridden. In April 1933 he converted to Christianity. During the conversion he reportedly died 3 times over a period of 10 minutes, due to his deformed heart condition. He remained paralyzed. On 8th August 1934 he was raised from his deathbed having reading read Mark 11 v23/4 and was miraculously healed. Jesus appeared in visions to Kenneth 8 times over several years. They changed the course of his ministry. In 1936 he founded his first non-denominational church. He preached his first sermon in a small community Baptist church in Roland Texas. In 1937 he became an Assemblies of God (AOG) minister and pastored for the next 12 years in 5 AOG churches. He started to travel. On 25 th of November 1938 he married Oretha Rooker. They were married for 64 years and had 2 children -Kenneth Wayne(1939) and Patricia(1941). He began an itinerant ministry as a Bible teacher and evangelist in 1949 after a vision. Between 1947-58 he joined the Voice of Healing Revival in the USA. He was given full admission to the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International -established in 1951… On 23rd January 1963 he formed the Kenneth E. Hagin Evangelistic Association (now K.H. Ministries) in Garland, Texas. This grew to include numerous media outreaches and ministries. ( Read notes on Evangelistic Association) 1966 , now in Tulsa, started selling reel to reel sermons. November he taught on KSKY radio for the first time. 1967 ordained minister by the North Texas District Council of AOG. Began regular radio broadcast ofFaith Seminar of the Air (2020 still being broadcast by son.) 1973 Kenneth, at a camp meeting, announced the creation of a ‘Bible training center’. 1974 founded Rhema Bible Training Center (now college). The college is known locally for its annual Christmas display (2 million lights) ( Read notes on Rhema Bible College) He wrote over 40 books. ( See Publications) Kenneth lived to be 86. On Saturday 13th, 2003 he went to bed feeling ill. Olaudah Equiano, known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa, He was probably born in the Eboe region of the kingdom of Benin province, in the area that is now southern Nigeria. ( He twice listed his birthplace in the Americas) Most of what he wrote in his book The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa (published in 1789)can be verified. ( See Amazon notes) As a child he was kidnapped with his sister, aged about 11, and sold to local slave traders and shipped across the Atlantic to Barbados and then Virginia. In Virginia he was sold to a Royal Naval officer, Lieutenant Michael Pascal. Pascal renamed him Gustavus Vassa - the name of a 16th century Swedish king ( he had already been called Michael and Jacob). He travelled the oceans with Pascal for 8 years. In his book he give eye witness accounts of the Seven Years War with France. Pascal favoured him by sending him to his sister-in-law so that he could attend school and learn to read and write. Olaudah was converted to Christianity and was baptised at St. Margaret’s Westminster on 9th February, 1759 Pascal then sold him to Captain James Doran of the Charming Sally at gravesend, from where he was transported to the Caribbean. Doran sent him to Montserrat where he was sold to Robert King, a prominent American Quaker merchant from Philadelphia who traded in the Caribbean. He worked as a deckhand, barber and valet for King. He earned enough money over 3 years, by trading on the side, to buy his freedom. He then spent the next 20 years travelling the world. He made trips to Turkey and the Arctic. He took care not to be captured and sold again as a slave. In 1786 he came to London, He became involved in the movement to abolish slavery and joined the Sons of Africa - a group of 12 black African men. (See notes) In 1789 he published his book. which depicted the horrors of slavery. he spent many months speaking in public about his life. It went through 9 editions in his lifetime and helped gain passage of the British Slave Trade Act of 1807 On 7th April 1792 he married Susannah Cullen, an English woman. They married in Soham, Cambridge and settled there. They had 2 daughters -Anna Maria and Joanna Susannah died in February 1796 Olaudah Equiano aged 52, died on 31st March 1797 just over a year later. The register reads Gustus Vasa, 52 years, St Mary Le Bone He was buried at Whitefield’s Tabernacle on 6th April. (burial place now lost). Greta Thunberg is the ‘face’ of Climate Change. I have included some basic information on Climate Change, Polar icecaps melting, Deforestation and trees. There are three vocabularies - Debate Words and Phrases, A Thesaurus of antonyms ands synonyms about Climate Change, plus a Poetry Aid. I have put together 10 pieces of work associated with trees. The second sheet about the rain forest I think is excellent clip art. The poetry aids ‘In the woods’ and ‘Trees’ also have excellent clip art. The two narrative pieces at the end, ‘Trees’ and ‘Tree Lover’ were both written with an environmental bias. The first dealing with the importance of trees, the second is how trees are inhabited by many wild life animals. David Woodroffe, an established illustrator, draw all the pictures.

Thomas was an English Wesleyan Methodist preacher. He was converted by John Wesley on 1st May 1739 in Bristol. In March 1740 he travelled for a period with Charles Wesley, In 1742 John put him in charge of the Foundery Society directing him to pray with the members and give them suitable advice. He also began to preach ’ without being called to it’ so there were complaints. Countess of Huntindon was impressed with his talents. Wesley heard Thomas and decided the dispute in his favour. In June 1745 he was 'pressed ’ for the navy while preaching in Cornwall. He ended up being given over to the military and spent several years in the army. On his release John had him ordained at Bath, He became one of Wesley’s main assistants and an assistant chaplain to the Countess of Huntingdon. Thomas was a divisive figure. He encouraged those who had visions. He adopted fellow minister George Bell’s prediction that the world would end on 28th February 1763. A schism became inevitable. Thomas in February told Wesley You take too much upon you .April 28th he broke from Wesley. Bell and about 200 left, Thomas set up his own church in Moorfield. A reunion was attempted but it never happened. (Read last 2 paragraphs) Thomas had a large congregation in Ropemaker’s Alley, Moorfield,. He finally set up in Princes Street. Moorfield. Wesley did visit Thomas in his last illness and preached in his chapel. Thomas died at his house in Moorfields on 18th March 1784.

Dietrick Bonhoeffer was a German protestant theologian who was important foe his support of ecumenism (unity) and his view of Christianity’s role in the secular world. His slight involvement in a plot to overthrow Adolf Hitler led to hie imprisonment and execution. His Letters and Papers from Prison published after his death is perhaps the most profound document of his convictions. Dietrick was brought up amid the academic circles of the University of Berlin. He was a gifted pianist and his family through the would study music.To their disappointment, aged just 14, he said he wanted to be a minister and theologian. Aged 21 he graduated from University of Berlin with a degree in Theology. He spent a short time in Spain being an assistant pastor to a German congregation. He went back to Germany to write a dissertation to earn the right to a university appointment. After a year in the USA he returned to take up the post of lecturer in systematic theology at University of Berlin. Adolf Hitler and Nazism were coming to the for. He wrote the Cost of Discipleship in 1937 - a call to a more faithful and radical obedience to Christ. During this time he was teaching pastors in an underground seminary. When it was discovered the Confessing Church became increasingly reluctant to speak out against Hitler. Dietrick to this point had been a pacifist and had tried to oppose Nazis through religious action and moral persuasion. He decided to become a double agent. He also became involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler. He was never at the centre of the plans but his resistance efforts to help the Jews was discovered. he was taken to Tegel prison. He spent 2 years in prison. Dietrick corresponded with family and friends, pastoring fellow prisoners and reflecting on the meaning of *Jesus Christ for Today*. In prison he began to outline a new theology.
