This power point lesson on Validity and Reliability in Psychological Research has the background definitions, facts, examples and explanations of the difference between validity and reliability. Use it to teach these 2 elements of any psychology syllabus. It includes exam style questions and sample answers.

This lesson is designed to take student through the chunking experiment that links to capacity and duration in the MSM. It has full instruction to explain how to get started and a printable results table for students to gather the raw data. It provides a good opportunity to link in to research methods and develop student’s understanding of and ability to write about how research in psychology works. It is accompanied by a help sheet for students to write up the experiment once they’ve carried it out. This could be given as a homework task following the DIY lesson. The starter activities link to research methodology and get students to think critically about questionnaires. Then this lesson follows on from the core study. It allows you to teach the main weaknesses of the study and ask students how they can expand on them. Students should then try out a 13 mark question or write about how the study could be improved.

This is a lesson and a set of student resources in one. The background slide gives the lesson the context then there is a mnemonic to enable students to learn and recall the types of data in psychological research. This is followed by a flowchart diagram showing how to choose the correct statistical test. Finally there is a partially filled task to show students how to decide on which data and test to use to be applied to existing studies they have covered, or for them to design their own research. All the slides should be printed and used in a tutorial style interactive lesson.
